Our Mission
The mission of the Metro East Humane Society is to improve animal welfare in the St. Louis Metro East by providing quality animal services, including adoption, advocacy, and preventative initiatives. We are dedicated to enriching the lives of people and animals through our community-driven mission.
Our History
Founded in 1986, MEHS emerged from a coalition formed to end the practice of selling animals to laboratories. Since then, we have grown from a small group into a vital resource for our community, currently serving a five-county area in southwestern Illinois with facilities in Edwardsville and Highland.
How We Care
We operate a no-kill shelter dedicated to providing a safe, healthy, and loving environment for the cats and dogs in our care. Our team of dedicated staff, including veterinary professionals, provides essential medical treatment, vaccinations, and spay/neuter services to every animal. We also rely on a wonderful network of foster volunteers who provide temporary homes for young, injured, or under-socialized animals to help them grow and heal.

Bringing a pet into your life is a joyful partnership, and we are here to help you find your next best friend. We believe in being transparent about our process; animals are placed on our website immediately upon availability, and we operate on a first-come, first-served basis. We take pride in our #SolidSupermutt dogs and our diverse feline residents, ensuring every adopter feels informed and confident in their choice.
