The mission of the La Plata County Humane Society is to protect, return, and rehome vulnerable pets in our community. We are here to help them, one paw at a time.
Founded on compassion in 1971, we have been a dedicated advocate for animals in Durango and the surrounding La Plata County for over 50 years. We exist to provide vital shelter for pets in need, rescue those in distress, and offer a pathway to a brighter, happier future.
As an open-admission shelter, we accept all pets from La Plata County that come through our doors, regardless of their circumstances. With a dedicated team of 50 staff members and over 300 passionate volunteers, we provide care for more than 6,000 animals each year. This commitment ensures that no vulnerable pet in our community is turned away.
Adoption is a joyful partnership, and our goal is to find loving, patient homes for every animal in our care. Our experienced counselors use a specialized Matchmaker Survey to help connect you with a companion that perfectly suits your lifestyle. Whether you are looking for a dog, cat, or small pet, we are here to guide you through the process of giving a deserving animal their well-earned second chance.
