Our Mission

At Pope Memorial Humane Society, we are dedicated to ensuring the compassionate care, treatment, and placement of companion animals in transition. We strive to enrich the lives of pets and people in our community through every adoption and interaction.

Our History

Founded in 1989, our organization was created to meet the urgent needs of homeless animals in our region. Since opening our dedicated facility in Thomaston in 1991, and expanding to our current 10,000-square-foot shelter in 2015, we have been committed to providing a safe haven for thousands of animals awaiting their forever homes.

Our Approach to Care

We believe in the dignity of every animal in our care, which is why all residents are treated until they are adopted. No animal is ever euthanized due to time or space constraints; we only consider such measures if an animal faces severe physical or behavioral challenges that cannot be resolved. Our facility in Thomaston serves numerous contracting communities across Maine, providing a professional and nurturing environment for pets in transition.

We prioritize personality and compatibility over looks, encouraging you to spend time getting to know our residents in our visitation rooms or even through our Slumber Party foster-to-adopt program for dogs.
