Our Mission
At Critter Adoption and Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.), our mission is simple: to reduce the number of homeless and unwanted dogs and cats through adoption, sterilization, and education. We believe that every living being deserves to be loved and given a second chance at life.
Our Story
Founded in 2000 by Dr. Hal Ott, D.V.M., and a group of passionate citizens, C.A.R.E. was born from a conviction to save healthy animals from being euthanized in Hillsborough County. For over 25 years, we have operated as a no-kill, 501(c)(3) public charity serving the Ruskin community, driven entirely by the commitment of our dedicated volunteers.
Our Care Model
We are a volunteer-driven organization operating our own facility on a 2.5-acre property in Ruskin. Our dogs enjoy outdoor kennel time for fresh air, exercise, and socialization during the day, while our cats roam freely in large rooms with access to screened lanais. We provide emergent care, rehabilitation, and a safe refuge for every animal in our shelter.

We take the time to truly understand each pet’s behavior, personality, and needs so we can find the perfect match for both the animal and the family. Adoptions at C.A.R.E. are based on finding the right fit, ensuring that every placement is a lasting, joyful partnership. We are proud to be fully transparent with our adopters, sharing all known medical and behavioral information to help you feel confident in your decision.
