HART of Maine is a dedicated no-kill cat shelter and adoption center committed to providing refuge, comfort, and comprehensive medical attention to surrendered, abandoned, injured, and abused cats. We believe that every feline deserves a life filled with safety, dignity, and a loving forever home.
Founded in 1997 and located in Cumberland, Maine, HART has served as a vital safe haven for cats in our community for over 25 years. Since opening our custom-built shelter in 2004, we have remained powered primarily by the generosity of individual donors and the passion of our dedicated volunteers, operating without public funding to ensure our cats receive the highest quality of care.
We pride ourselves on our open-environment shelter where cats can socialize, play, and form bonds with one another. Our commitment to feline welfare includes comprehensive medical support—such as vaccinations, microchipping, and spay/neuter services—as well as specialized programs like our Shy Angels Socialization Team to help our more fearful residents build confidence. Once a HART cat, always a HART cat; we maintain a lifelong safety net for every animal that passes through our doors.
We view adoption as the start of a lifelong partnership, and we are here to help you find the perfect match for your home and lifestyle. Because we care deeply about the longevity and health of our feline friends, we ensure every cat is placed in an indoor-only environment where they can thrive. When you adopt from HART, you are not just bringing home a pet; you are becoming part of our extended family.
Are you ready to meet your new companion? We invite you to view our available cats and kittens online or visit us during our adoption hours to see our current residents in person. Together, we can continue to provide comfort and hope to the many cats waiting for their second chance at happiness.
