Our Mission
The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation strengthens disaster response in America by rescuing dogs and partnering them with first responders to save lives. We turn rescued dogs into dedicated search and rescue heroes.
Our History and Purpose
Founded in 1996 by retired schoolteacher Wilma Melville, our organization was born from a clear need for more canine disaster search teams following the Oklahoma City bombing. We bridge the gap between shelter dogs seeking a job and fire departments that need highly trained search partners.
From Rescued to Rescuer
We recruit dogs from across the country that have been rescued from abuse or abandonment. While their high energy and tenacity can make them unsuitable for traditional family life, these are the exact qualities that make them exceptional search dogs who love to work. We provide professional training at our National Training Center to help them reach their full potential.
Our Lifetime Care Commitment
We believe in a promise that lasts a lifetime: once a dog is rescued by our foundation, they will never need to be rescued again. Every dog is supported throughout their training and their retirement, ensuring they always have a loving home. Whether they graduate as a search partner or transition to a different path, we prioritize their happiness and wellbeing above all else.
