Our Mission
The Copper Country Humane Society is dedicated to providing a safe, no-time-limit haven for domestic dogs and cats in Keweenaw, Houghton, and Baraga Counties, as well as the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. We are committed to the humane treatment of every animal that enters our care.
Our History
Founded in 1974, our organization began with a simple goal: to provide foster homes for lost and abused animals in our community. In 1994, we combined resources with the Keweenaw Animal Alliance to create the unified shelter we operate today, eventually opening our current state-of-the-art facility in 2005.
How We Care
We are a local 501(c)(3) non-profit that relies entirely on private donations and fundraising to support the roughly 900 animals we serve annually. Our shelter provides a warm, clean environment with spacious kennels and play areas where our dedicated staff and volunteers offer professional, quality care. We are committed to sterilization for all animals in our care, ensuring we help manage pet populations while keeping our animals healthy.
