Our Mission
The Humane Society of Otter Tail County is dedicated to providing temporary shelter and care to stray, abandoned, and surrendered animals to ensure every adoptable friend finds a caring, permanent home. We strive to promote the humane treatment of all animals while encouraging responsible pet guardianship throughout our community.
Our History
Our journey began in 1979 when founders Carol Schaaf and Pam Swenson sought a solution for homeless animals in our area. Starting with humble roots at a local farm and a small donated building, we have grown steadily thanks to the unwavering support of volunteers and generous community members. Today, we operate out of our own facility, which was constructed in 1994 to better serve the pets who need us most.

We are a local non-profit that relies on the dedication of our staff and community volunteers to keep our shelter animals well-loved and exercised. Our facility serves as a safe haven where animals receive quality care, socialization, and medical attention while they await their forever families. From dog walkers to cat socializers and foster parents, our team works tirelessly to ensure every animal is happy and healthy.
