At the Poweshiek Animal League Shelter (PALS), we are dedicated to providing a safe haven, compassionate care, and permanent homes for animals in need. We work 365 days a year to act as a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.
PALS began in 2004 with a network of dedicated foster homes and established our licensed shelter in 2007 on seven acres south of Grinnell. We were founded to address a critical local need, stepping in to ensure that stray animals in our community have a safe, long-term alternative to the limited options previously available.
We are proud to be a 100% donation-funded, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, relying entirely on the generosity of our supporters to maintain our facility and operations. Because we operate as a no-kill shelter, we provide responsible veterinary care—including spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and medical treatment—to every dog and cat that comes through our doors. Our operations manager and board of directors oversee a facility that ensures each animal receives the individualized attention they deserve while they wait for their new beginning.
We believe that adopting a pet is a life-changing experience that brings spontaneity, joy, and companionship into a home. Our team is dedicated to thoughtful matching, helping you find a furry friend whose personality and needs align perfectly with your family and lifestyle.
We invite you to experience the joy of adoption by visiting our website to view our current residents or contacting us to schedule an appointment. Whether you choose to adopt, volunteer, or support us through a donation, your partnership helps us continue our mission of saving lives. We look forward to helping you meet your new best friend!
