The Humane Society of the High Plains is dedicated to fostering the humane treatment of animals through advocacy, education, professional shelter services, and the promotion of positive human-animal relationships. We work every day to ensure that our community’s animals receive the care and compassion they deserve while they wait for their forever homes.
Our journey began in 1975 when a group of dedicated individuals came together to advocate for animal welfare in the Hays community. From the grand opening of our first shelter in 1978 to the establishment of the Virginia Miller Animal Shelter in 1993, our growth has been fueled by the unwavering support of our neighbors who believe in providing a safe haven for those who cannot speak for themselves.
We operate as a brick-and-mortar shelter facility located on US Highway 40, where our staff and volunteers work diligently to provide food, medical care, and daily enrichment for every animal in our keep. While our primary focus is shelter care, we also utilize a foster network specifically for animals requiring around-the-clock attention, such as orphaned puppies and kittens. Every resource we provide is aimed at improving the lives of our residents as they prepare to transition into permanent families.
Adopting is a joyful partnership, and we are committed to helping you find the perfect match for your lifestyle. We ensure every potential owner is well-prepared, requiring in-person processing and landlord approval to create lasting, stable placements. Whether you are looking for a new furry friend or interested in our Lonely Hearts Club for long-term residents, we strive to make the adoption process transparent and rewarding for both pet and person.
There are many ways to make a difference, from volunteering your time to socialize our animals to visiting us for a Doggy Day Out. We invite you to browse our available pets online, stop by during our open hours to meet your future companion, or join us at our next community fundraiser. Together, we can ensure every pet in the High Plains finds the love and security they deserve.
