Action Volunteers for Animals (AVA) is a dedicated, 100% volunteer-run registered charity working to improve the lives of stray and feral cats throughout the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
Founded in the early 1970s by animal welfare advocate Merlin Andrew, our organization grew from a passionate group of volunteers determined to support animals in need. We have been a registered charity since 1981, committed to providing medical care and support to homeless cats until they find the loving families they deserve.
AVA operates as a foster-based rescue, meaning our rescued cats are cared for in safe, loving homes until they are ready for adoption. In addition to our foster network, we partner with community adoption centres in various regions to increase visibility for our cats. We also champion Trap-Neuter-Return-Monitor (TNRM) programs to manage and support feral cat colonies with compassion.
We believe every adoption is a lifetime commitment and a beautiful, joyful partnership. Our team takes great care in matching each unique cat with the right environment, whether they need a feline companion or prefer to be the only pet in the home. By prioritizing thoughtful placements, we ensure that both our cats and their new families have the best possible start to a long and happy life together.
It truly takes a village to help our feline friends, and we invite you to be part of the solution. You can browse our current adoptable cats online, consider opening your home as a foster parent, or support our medical and rescue efforts through a donation.
