Our Mission
Action Volunteers for Animals (AVA) is a 100% volunteer-run, registered charity dedicated to improving the lives of stray and feral cats throughout the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). We believe in a village approach to rescue, ensuring every cat in our care receives the medical support and love they deserve on their journey to a forever home.
Our Story
Founded in the early 1970s by animal welfare advocate Merlin Andrew, AVA began when a group of dedicated volunteers united to protect shelter animals during a strike. Since becoming a registered charity in 1981, we have remained committed to that original spirit of grassroots advocacy, fueled by the generosity of our supporters and the bravery of our volunteers.
How We Operate
We function as a foster-based rescue, providing a safe, home-like environment for our cats until they are ready for adoption. Our network reaches across the GTHA and parts of Ontario, where we provide essential veterinary care, including spaying, neutering, and vaccinations. Beyond rescue, we are proud champions of Trap-Neuter-Return-Monitor (TNRM) programs to help stabilize community cat colonies.
