Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a single, heartfelt mission: to rescue abused, abandoned, and neglected dogs and place them into loving, lifelong homes. We are proud to serve as the Midwest’s largest no-kill facility, offering every dog in our care a home along the way.
Founded in August 1999 by the Azzar family, our sanctuary began as a tribute to their beloved dog, Mackenzie. Driven by a desire to continue her legacy, we have grown into a dedicated space where dogs in need find safety, compassion, and a second chance at happiness.
As a non-profit that operates without state or federal funding, we rely entirely on the generosity of our community. Our sanctuary is not just a shelter; it is a comprehensive facility featuring an on-site vet clinic, the K-9 Gym, and a specialized K-9 Enrichment Program to ensure our dogs thrive physically, mentally, and emotionally during their stay. We provide every resident with individualized veterinary treatment, training, and behavioral support tailored to their unique needs.
We believe that adoption is a thoughtful, joyful journey. Rather than rushing the process, we use a thorough, intentional approach to match applicants with a dog whose personality, sociability, and energy level perfectly align with their lifestyle. Our team is committed to full transparency regarding every dog’s history and health, ensuring you have all the information needed to build a successful, lifelong relationship.
Are you ready to find your new best friend? We invite you to view our current adoptable dogs, learn more about our thoughtful adoption process, or explore how you can get involved as a volunteer or sponsor. Together, we can provide the love and dignity every dog deserves.
