Our Mission
Prairie Paws Animal Shelter is dedicated to providing compassionate care and placement for animals in need, while strengthening the human-animal bond in our community. We strive to give every animal a second chance, creating a safer, more humane environment for pets and people alike.
A Legacy of Compassion
Our journey began in 1946 when Beatrice Martin Peck founded the Franklin County Humane Society to provide a voice for animals who had none. Since opening our first shelter doors in 1948, we have evolved into a multi-facility network that continues to advocate for the welfare and protection of our animal residents.
How We Care
Today, Prairie Paws operates three distinct shelter locations in Ottawa, Manhattan, and Emporia, each working together to provide high-quality care for approximately 2,500 animals annually. We operate as a private, non-profit organization focused on rehabilitating homeless pets and increasing access to affordable spay and neuter services. Our dedicated staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure every animal is prepared for their transition into a loving new home.
