Our Mission

The Heart of Minnesota Animal Shelter is passionately devoted to the care of animals in need by providing rescue, shelter, adoption, and veterinary services throughout central Minnesota. We believe in the power of second chances and are committed to improving our community one life-saving success at a time.

Our Journey

Our story began in 1999 as a foster-home-based organization, with our very first adoption taking place that June. Over the last two decades, we have grown into a dedicated facility, celebrating the milestone of our 10,000th animal intake in 2025. We remain proud of our humble beginnings while continuing to evolve to meet the needs of our local animal population.

How We Care

HMAS operates through a blend of compassionate care and professional resources, utilizing our shelter campus to provide safety and support for animals. Our facility includes dedicated spaces for our animals, and we have recently expanded our capabilities to include in-house surgeries. We rely on the generous support of our community, staff, and volunteers to maintain these vital services.
