Anti-Cruelty is Chicago’s only nonprofit open-door humane society dedicated to building a healthy and happy community where pets and people thrive together. We believe in the power of the human-animal bond and work every day to strengthen that vital connection across our city.
Founded in 1899 by four visionary women, we have spent more than 125 years at the intersection of animal welfare and social well-being. What began as a simple meeting to address the needs of Chicago’s forgotten animals has blossomed into an entire community committed to caring for, protecting, and advocating for pets in need.
As a private, independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we operate an open-admission shelter that provides care to any animal in need, regardless of behavior or medical history. Our comprehensive approach includes low-cost veterinary services, behavioral support, and a robust foster network that allows pets to flourish in home environments while preparing for their forever families.
Adoption is about building a family, and our team of experts is dedicated to guiding you through every step of the process. We provide customized adoption consultations to ensure we help you find the best match for your lifestyle, setting both you and your new companion up for a lifetime of success.
Are you ready to find your new best friend or support our mission? We invite you to visit our adoption center at 157 W. Grand Avenue, browse our available animals online, or join us at one of our upcoming events to learn how you can make a difference in the life of a pet today.
