CARE Humane Society is dedicated to advancing the humane treatment and responsible ownership of companion animals through community education, sheltering, and life-changing adoptions. We strive to create a future where every adoptable animal is valued and finds a loving, forever home.
Founded in 1974 as the Lee County Humane Society, our organization grew from a small group of volunteers fostering animals in their homes into a vital resource for our community. In 2023, we rebranded as CARE—standing for Compassion, Adoption, Rescue, and Education—to better reflect our evolving role as the leading advocate for companion animals in Auburn and Opelika.
Our operations center on a compassionate, community-focused approach to animal welfare. We maintain a dedicated shelter facility on Ware Drive and manage a robust, growing foster care program that allows animals to thrive in home environments while awaiting their next chapter. By providing medical care, safety net services, and community initiatives, we work daily to strengthen the unique bond between humans and their pets.
Adoption is the joyful start of a lifelong partnership, and we are here to help you find the perfect match for your family. Whether you are looking for a puppy, dog, kitten, or cat, our team is committed to providing supportive, transparent guidance throughout your adoption journey.
We invite you to experience the warmth of our community by exploring our available pets online or visiting us in Auburn. You can also join our mission by volunteering, fostering, or attending one of our many community events. Together, we can provide the care and second chances that every homeless animal deserves.
