Shelby Humane Society

Our Mission

At Shelby Humane, we are dedicated to caring for homeless, abused, neglected, and abandoned animals in Shelby County, Alabama. We strive to educate our community to instill an increased awareness and commitment to the responsibility of compassionate animal ownership and protection.

Who We Are

Founded on a vision of collaboration, Shelby Humane serves as a vital resource for our community. We work tirelessly to reduce the number of unwanted animals in our region by promoting proper pet identification, providing low-cost spay and neuter clinics, and offering essential support to pet owners in need.

Our Commitment to Care

Our facility in Columbiana provides a safe, welcoming environment for animals in transition. We take in strays, provide necessary vaccinations and veterinary care, and spay or neuter every animal before they are ready for their forever home. With the help of our dedicated staff and foster networks, we ensure every animal receives the love and support they deserve while waiting to meet their new families.

Finding Your Perfect Match

We believe that every adoption is the start of a beautiful partnership. Our adoptions are handled on a first-come, first-served basis, and our team is committed to helping you find the right companion to fit your lifestyle. We encourage you to browse our available dogs and cats, read about our pets of the week, and learn how you can become a part of our adoption community.

Join Our Mission

Whether you are looking to adopt, volunteer, foster, or simply learn more about responsible pet care, there are many ways to get involved. We invite you to visit us at 381 McDow Road in Columbiana, explore our volunteer opportunities, or check out our upcoming events. Together, we can create more happy tales for the animals who need us most.

10/22 - 💙 CHRISTMAS CAME EARLY AT SHELBY HUMANE! 💚 Sometimes, all it takes is an idea to make a BIG difference! 🐾 Wendy Cain, a Chick-Fil-A employee, recently put out a simple Facebook post asking for donations for the animals at Shelby Humane, and the community response was nothing short of incredible! “The response was overwhelming,” Wendy shared. “Day one, I had customers giving me cash. I had customers bringing in just bags and bags and bags of things.” With the support of her customers and generous people throughout the Alabaster, Oak Mountain and surrounding communities, Wendy collected an amazing assortment of much-needed supplies for our shelter pets, including: 🧺 Approximately 175 blankets 🛁 More than 200 towels 🐶 Dog toys, bowls and rawhides 💚 Cone collars and other essential supplies “We have the best customers,” Wendy said. “But it wasn’t just our customers, too. It was also a lot of the community … just a lot of good people.” Wendy and her supporters delivered a van full of donations to Shelby Humane, bringing comfort, enrichment and a little extra love to the animals in our care. (Van supplied by Metro Storage 119). Wendy, thank you for following your heart and inspiring so many others to do the same! And to everyone who donated, shared the post or helped make this possible, thank you for showing our shelter pets just how much their community cares. 💙💚

10/5 - Thank you Scouts!! Back in June, Aaron reached out to Shelby Humane with an idea for his Eagle Scout project through Troop 532. He developed the proposal, worked through the approval process with Shelby Humane and his troop leaders, and took the lead in turning his idea into a project that would make a real difference for our animals. Last week, Aaron, his dad Mike, his mom Dee Dee, his brother Seth, and other members of Troop 532 and their families came out to Shelby Humane and made that idea a reality. They built us all-new dog houses, gave our play yards a much-needed facelift, and rebuilt our agility equipment. And judging by the reaction from the dogs, the new accommodations have already received their official approval. Aaron, we are especially grateful that you chose Shelby Humane for your Eagle Scout project and saw this idea all the way through. We truly appreciate the time, hard work, and commitment you, your family, and everyone from Troop 532 put into making Shelby Humane a better place for the animals we care for every day. And most importantly...the dogs say thank you, too.

9/27 - Look who joined the Shelby Humane volunteer crew yesterday! Our volunteer coordinator, Rick, said they had a great group at Shelter Orientation, and were excited to have some new volunteers ready to jump in and get involved! He snapped the volunteer photo too early and we missed some people. They learned the basics, met some of our amazing animals, and got their first look at what being a Shelby Humane volunteer is all about. And can we talk about the kids?! We LOVE seeing families volunteer together. There’s something pretty awesome about watching parents and kids roll up their sleeves, get involved, and have a little fun while helping the animals. We’ve got some future animal lovers in the making! Welcome to all of our newest volunteers! We’re glad you’re here .... now let the fun begin!
