Saving Lives and Completing Families

The Montgomery Humane Society is dedicated to preventing cruelty to animals by providing a safe harbor for homeless pets and championing responsible pet ownership. For over 100 years, we have been committed to saving lives and completing families throughout our community.

Our Century of Compassion

Founded in the 1920s, our organization has grown from a small group of concerned citizens into a vital community resource. Over the decades, we have evolved through a shared vision of providing professional care and advocacy, culminating in our current facility on John Overton Drive where we continue our mission of care for all animals regardless of breed, age, or medical condition.

How We Help

As an open-admission shelter, we provide comprehensive care for animals in need, supported by a compassionate team and an active foster network. Beyond the walls of our shelter, we offer intervention programs, behavior training, and community resources to help pets stay in their original homes whenever possible. We are proud to be a center for medical services and support for pet owners in Montgomery City and County.

Find Your New Best Friend

Our adoption program is focused on creating lasting bonds by matching the unique needs of each animal with the right owner. We believe that adopting a pet is a joyful partnership, and our team is here to guide you through every step of the process. We invite you to visit our adoption center seven days a week to meet our wonderful animals.

Join Our Mission

Whether you are looking to open your heart to an adoptable pet, interested in our volunteer programs, or looking to support our work through donations, there are many ways to make a difference. 10/23 - Some dogs demand your attention. Others quietly steal your heart. Ophelia is the second kind. ❤️ At just a year and a half old, this beautiful Great Pyrenees is one of the gentlest souls you could ever hope to meet. Ophelia is a little shy in the hustle and bustle of shelter life, but give her a moment to feel comfortable and you’ll discover a girl who wants nothing more than to lean into you and soak up every ounce of affection you’re willing to give. 🥹 Great Pyrenees are guardian breeds, known for their loyalty, independence, and protective instincts. As wonderful as they are, they’re not necessarily the right fit for every household. We encourage potential adopters to have experience with the breed or take the time to understand their unique needs before making a commitment. So far, Ophelia has done beautifully with other dogs and even spent time hanging out with our office cat without any issues! She’s gentle. She’s gorgeous. She’s incredibly sweet. And she’s waiting for someone to see just how special she is. We have a feeling that once Ophelia finds her people, she’s going to love them with her whole heart. ❤️ #adoptdontshop #shelterpets #savealife Apply to foster or adopt at Montgomeryhumane.com

10/22 - Meet Whitley, a stunning young Merle pittie who just happens to be clinically blind. But don’t tell Whitley she’s different, because she certainly doesn’t act like it! Whitley relies heavily on her senses of smell and hearing to navigate the world around her. And while she hasn’t seemed to mind her time with us, we know the shelter environment can be overwhelming for a dog who depends so much on those two senses. The constant barking, unfamiliar smells, and never-ending activity make it difficult for her to experience the peace and predictability she deserves. Whitley needs a foster family or, even better, a forever home! ❤️ She’s looking for someone willing to make a few adjustments to help her navigate her surroundings safely and confidently. A consistent furniture arrangement, a little patience, and a predictable routine can make a world of difference for a visually impaired dog. And please don’t mistake her blindness for helplessness! Whitley has ALL the energy, personality, and spunk you’d expect from a young pittie! She wants to play, explore, love, and experience life just like any other dog. Her blindness hasn’t slowed her down for a single second! Whitley doesn’t need someone to feel sorry for her. She needs someone willing to see everything she’s capable of, even if she can’t see them. ❤️ We know there’s a special family out there who can give this beautiful girl the life she deserves. Help us find them! Apply to foster or adopt at Montgomeryhumane.com 🐾 And if you can’t bring Whitley home, please share her story. The right person may be just one share away.

10/21 - Blossom is 100% GOOD DOG! 🌸🐾❤️ She’s petite, she’s wonderful with other dogs, she’s cat-friendly, and she absolutely ADORES people! Seriously, what more could you ask for?! Blossom has been chosen a time or two for a meet-and-greet, and each time we were absolutely floored when the families walked away without her. We watched the interactions, saw how sweet she was, and thought, “This has GOT to be her moment!” But somehow, it wasn’t. Maybe those families just needed a little puppy therapy that day. Maybe they came to play, and Blossom was more than happy to oblige. Whatever the reason, we’re still scratching our heads because this girl checks SO many boxes! Sometimes the hardest part of shelter work is watching a genuinely wonderful dog do everything right and still get overlooked. Blossom doesn’t know she wasn’t chosen. She just knows she got to meet some new friends, share a little love, and have some fun. And that sweet, optimistic spirit is exactly why we adore her. ❤️ If you’ve been searching for an all-around GOOD DOG to foster or adopt, please consider Blossom. She’s already got everything she needs to be someone’s very best friend. All she’s missing is someone who chooses her. 🌸 Apply to foster or adopt at Montgomeryhumane.com.

10/20 - ❤️ BIG ADOPTION WEEKEND… BUT OUR BIG DOGS ARE STILL WAITING! 🐾 Thanks to the Subaru adoption event, we celebrated an incredible weekend of adoptions! So many animals found loving homes, and we couldn’t be happier! But amid all the excitement, we noticed something heartbreaking. Very few adopters were looking for dogs weighing more than 25 pounds. We understand the appeal of smaller dogs and puppies, but we want to challenge a common misconception: Smaller doesn’t always mean easier, and bigger doesn’t always mean more work. Many of our mature, medium-to-large dogs have already outgrown the chaos of puppyhood. Their personalities are established, their energy levels are more predictable, and some already understand what it means to live in a home. A 60-pound dog may be perfectly content with a couple of walks and an afternoon on the couch, while a 15-pound dog might have enough energy to keep you moving all day! The right dog isn’t determined by weight. It’s determined by compatibility. Unfortunately, our larger dogs are often the ones who wait the longest. They watch puppies and smaller dogs leave while they remain behind kennel doors, despite having just as much love to offer. And remember, adult dogs don’t necessarily end up in shelters because they’ve done something wrong. Sometimes their families simply couldn’t keep them. Their circumstances changed, but their worth never did. So before you decide your next companion must weigh less than 25 pounds, we ask you to consider what you’re really looking for. A calm companion? A walking buddy? A couch potato? A loyal best friend? We may have exactly what you’re looking for. They just might weigh 60 pounds instead of 16. To everyone who adopted this weekend, THANK YOU! ❤️ And to our bigger, overlooked dogs, we’re not giving up on finding your people. 🐾 Don’t measure your next best friend in pounds. Measure them in love. Apply to adopt or foster at Montgomeryhumane.com.

10/8 - Scooter may see the world differently, but that doesn’t mean his future is any less bright. ❤️ At just one year old, Scooter has already endured more pain than most dogs experience in a lifetime. This handsome little Pug arrived at our shelter with significant visual impairment and severely compromised eyes. Initially, we hoped that only one eye would need to be removed. Unfortunately, further examination revealed ulceration and swelling of the globe in his other eye, leaving us with the heartbreaking reality that both eyes needed to go. We understand that Scooter’s appearance may be difficult for some people to see. But here’s what we want you to understand: Scooter isn’t mourning the loss of his sight. He’s finally getting relief from his pain. He had very little vision before surgery, and the discomfort he was living with must have been tremendous. Now, for the first time in who knows how long, Scooter has the opportunity to experience life without that constant suffering. And the best part? Scooter is still Scooter. A young, vibrant, resilient little boy with an entire lifetime of love left to give. We do want to be very clear that Scooter needs an experienced, committed adopter. Pugs are a breed that often requires ongoing veterinary care, even without the significant medical challenges Scooter has already faced. His future family will also need the patience and understanding to help a blind dog navigate his surroundings safely and confidently. Scooter doesn’t need anyone to feel sorry for him. He needs someone who can see beyond what he’s lost and recognize everything he still has to offer. He may have lost his eyes, but he hasn’t lost his chance at a beautiful life. ❤️ Apply to adopt at Montgomeryhumane.com.

10/5 - Beau may be some sort of Basset Hound mix, but whatever is in that DNA, it made one HANDSOME little guy. 😍 Beau qualifies to go home through our Foster With Intent to Adopt program. That means he can leave the shelter and begin settling into a home, but until he is neutered, he must remain in Montgomery County. We know that restriction can be frustrating, so we want to explain why it matters. First, we’d like Beau to have a little more time before undergoing surgery. Second, because he is not yet neutered, he needs to remain within our jurisdiction so we can ensure the foster agreement is followed. And finally, pet overpopulation is very real. We simply cannot allow Beau to accidentally make a few more little Beaus in a neighboring county because someone didn’t follow the rules. 😅 If you live outside Montgomery County, don’t let that discourage you! The majority of our animals can go home with out-of-county adopters since they are already fully vetted.

10/2 - Some animals are saved with just one picture. Some need a little more attention. Some need a Reel, another post, another share… and Julep deserves every bit of it. So we’ll keep trying whatever it takes to get this good girl into a good home. ❤️ This stunning, almost 7-year-old girl helped start a family. As that family grew and their space became smaller, Julep eventually found herself in a situation where there was simply no longer room for her. Now she’s starting over. Julep is a well-mannered, mature girl who is truly in the prime of her life. If you’ve ever loved a dog into their senior years, you know there’s something especially sweet about this age. The puppy chaos is behind them. They know how to settle in, how to be part of a home, and somehow every ordinary moment with them feels a little more precious. Julep has already spent years knowing what it means to belong to someone. We want that for her again. Maybe one picture will do it. Maybe this Reel will. Maybe it will be your share that finally puts her in front of the person she’s been waiting for. Apply to foster or adopt Julep at Montgomeryhumane.com. ❤️

10/1 - Jupiter came to us incredibly frail. She had gone far too long without the nutrition her body desperately needed but somehow, that never stopped her from looking at every person she met like they were her new best friend. ❤️ Now, 10 pounds later, Jupiter is feeling GOOD. She is extremely food motivated and still eats every meal like she’s not quite convinced another one is coming. Thankfully, despite everything she went through, she has shown no food aggression….just a girl who really, really appreciates dinner. And with proper nutrition has come something else: energy. Lots of it. 😂 Jupiter now acts like the young, healthy, well-fed dog she was always supposed to be. She wants to move, play, explore and experience life outside of a shelter kennel. She has survived being hungry. Now she deserves to learn what it feels like to be secure. To know there will always be another meal. Another soft place to sleep. Another person waiting for her at the end of the day. Jupiter deserves normalcy. Help us give her her ticket out. ❤️ Apply to foster or adopt Jupiter at Montgomeryhumane.com. #animalshelters #adoptdontshop #animalwelfare #animallover

She will need immediate foster care following surgery or, even better, an adopter willing to give her a safe place to heal and call home.
