Almost There: A Mom + Pups Rescue is dedicated to saving the lives of pregnant and nursing dogs and their puppies. We provide a safe, nurturing environment where these vulnerable families can thrive before finding their forever homes.
Our Story
Founded by Geri Hormel, who started by opening her own home to large breed pregnant dogs in need, our rescue has grown into a specialized hub for maternal care. We recognized a critical need in our community for dedicated space and expertise for mamas and newborns, and we have been working tirelessly ever since to provide that life-saving bridge.
Our Care Model
We specialize in the unique, intensive needs of expectant and nursing dogs. Our facility in Phoenix features Mutternity Suites designed for comfort and health, while our dedicated team and foster network provide the socialization and enrichment these dogs need to grow. Every dog in our care receives personalized attention, including our signature Puppy Preschool for the little ones and customized training programs for our mamas.

Our behavior team spends weeks getting to know each dog's personality, energy level, and preferences to ensure we make the right connection for both the pet and your family. 9/30 - Today was a very special little guy’s birthday! 🎂❤️ Macro celebrated his first birthday, and while we wish he were celebrating in a furever home, we made sure he felt extra loved. His current foster, previous foster, and long-term foster all helped celebrate him—even from afar along with our team! Macro came to Almost There Rescue at just 4 weeks old and born with congenital hydrocephalus and limited to no vision, Macro has needed some extra care and time to grow and thrive. Thankfully, his amazing foster families have been there every step of the way. ❤️ Despite his challenges, Macro doesn’t let anything slow him down. He’s adapted beautifully and continues to amaze everyone who meets him. Happy 1st birthday, sweet Macro! We hope your next birthday is in the furever home you deserve. 🎉🐾

9/27 - $200 gets a puppy from rescue to adoption at @almostthererescue in Phoenix. Vaccines and spay/neuter included. One mom and her whole litter of 7 to 8 pups runs about $1,000. No government funding backs any of it. Day 3 of Optimus was giveback day. We hit @bamkazamgames, @pizza.to.the.rescue (25% back to ATR), and an afternoon at the rescue where we worked through their four biggest growth priorities alongside their team. 500+ puppies find homes at ATR every year. Every dollar and every hour matters at that operation. To the members who showed up for all three days: you carried this room, and you left ATR with a stack of work they can start on tomorrow. Appreciate you all. Here's to the future.
