The Humane Society of Sedona is dedicated to improving the lives of companion animals in our communities. We are committed to building a caring environment where every adoptable and treatable pet finds a life-long, loving home.

For over sixty years, we have served the Verde Valley with a steadfast commitment to animal welfare. The Linda and Allan Brecher Center for Animals, designed by Shelter Planners of America, provides a professional space where we prioritize the well-being of every animal in our care.
Our Care Model
We believe in quality care that meets or exceeds the standards of the Association of Shelter Veterinarians. Our dedicated team uses positive reinforcement behavior training to prepare pets for their new families, while our passionate volunteers ensure each animal receives socialization and love. Additionally, our foster network provides extra support for our most vulnerable pets, ensuring every individual animal gets the personalized attention they deserve.

We are a proud No-Kill shelter, meaning we do not euthanize animals due to lack of space or for population control. 10/15 - Summer is over, but no one told Onyx! ☀️ This water girl is not ready to put the hose and baby pool away just yet 🤣 We need your help finding Onyx a home. She’s spent more than half her life here at the shelter, and we’re having trouble understanding why! She’s such a load of fun! When she’s not stealing the hose or swimming in the baby pool, Onyx has the best time playing with stuffed animals in our dog park and getting belly rubs from our staff and volunteers. She is definitely a favorite around here! 💖 Onyx bonds deeply with her people and is super affectionate with those she loves, and would prefer to be your only pet. This little girl is very smart and has learned so many tricks here and is just so eager to please someone who will love her. Onyx is spayed, microchipped, up-to-date on vaccines, and her adoption fee has been SPONSORED! . 10/13 - THIS IS A BIG DEAL!!! 😍 For weeks and weeks at the shelter, Mama Cat (now Najia) was shut down. She spent all of her time here curled up in the back of her cat kennel, unwilling to come out and explore. When Najia first arrived at HSS as a stray with her kittens, she had scrapes and wounds along her back and head and was understandably very unsure of people. Her body healed, her beautiful coat grew back, but learning to feel safe was going to take a little more time. Luckily, a very kind foster stepped up to help! And now, in the quiet and comfort of a foster home, Najia is starting to blossom. 🌸 She’s discovered that feather toys are VERY fun - especially the feather toys! She’s been enjoying cozy days watching the rain from inside, and little by little, more of her personality is beginning to shine through. I mean look! She’s even being SILLY!! 🪶🌧️🐱 These might seem like small things, but for a kitty who has spent so much of her life simply trying to survive, playing, relaxing and feeling safe are pretty big victories. ❤️🩹 Najia is about 2 years old and still needs a patient, compassionate adopter who will let her build trust at her own pace. But now we’re getting a glimpse of the kitty waiting underneath all that uncertainty—and we can’t wait to see who she becomes when she finally knows she’s home for good. 🏡 If you have a quiet home, a little patience and a lot of love to give, we’d love for you to meet her (although just know, she will likely be pretty shy still!) 10/12 - It’s Monday again! But never fear, Gracie is here! 😍 She is our pet of the week and we just need you to know how incredible she is! This gorgeous 3-year-old pit bull has the happiest smile you’ll ever see, and an equally beautiful heart. 🩷 Gracie was found as a stray and never claimed. She is ready to leave her past behind and begin a wonderful new chapter with a loving family. She’s a strong, energetic girl who would thrive with a confident adopter ready to give her plenty of care, patience and affection. Gracie loves people and loves to play with toys. She has not been reactive to dogs here at the shelter and may do well with another dog at home - but a meet and greet is always required! 10/9 - Happy Hank is here to put a smile on your face this Friday morning! 😀 He really makes all of us smile around here. He is handsome, playful, loving, and just cute as a bug with that fluffy tail of his. When he first arrived, Hank was definitely all puppy energy! He had a wild streak and spirit that was a lot to handle. But Hank has really been acing his training. He knows some basic commands now and listens so well. He’s become a staff and volunteer favorite to take out on walks or to the park 💖 Hank is super playful and loves people and all the attention he can get. He loves playing with squeaky toys and is doing well with slow introductions to other dogs here at the shelter (although a meet and greet is always recommended!) Handsome Hank even enjoys getting his fluffy coat brushed - gotta look his best for his new family! We think Hank is just the bees knees and that he’ll make an amazing companion! He is fixed, microchipped, and up to date on his vaccines. His adoption fee has been generously sponsored! 10/8 - A day in the life of our very own Axle Rose! 🌹 Lots of toy time, some snuggles, some more toy time, and maybe a couple walks. And guess what? That smile is ALWAYS on this cutie pie’s face! Axle is the sweetest dog and he needs your help finding a family! 🙏 He is one of the first dogs all of our volunteers want to walk during their shift. He’s is super easy to harness up and take outside! Axle walks well on a leash and he also loves to play in the park. Axle is all about his toys! He loves the squeaky ones - if he can rip them apart, he’s into it 😂 He will run to fetch one ball and find another along the way and try to pick it up. He’s hilarious to watch, and it brings us so much joy to see him happy. This cutie may do great with people but would prefer to be the only pet in the home. Axle is not only playful, but he loves to be scratched. He really just loves to be loved. He is quite affectionate and happy and is ready to show someone how wonderful he is! Why not you!? He is just 1.5 years old and is fixed, microchipped, and up to date on his vaccines. He has been at the shelter way too long and needs YOUR help to spread the word about how wonderful he is! 10/7 - Let’s take a minute to slow down your day and enjoy a massage moment with our girl, Sweetie! Our staff and volunteers have poured so much love into this darling girl, and we are just thrilled with the progress she’s made. We are so happy to see that little smile on Sweetie’s face, because we know her life hasn’t always been very sweet. She was saved from deplorable living conditions by one of our rescue partners and has taken quite a while to open up to us here at the shelter. But as you can see, she has definitely learned how to trust people again and quite honestly wants nothing but the positive attention and the tender love that was withheld from her for so long. Sweetie isn’t really into toys, and while she likes to go on walks, that’s not her favorite thing either. What she loves most is attention and feeling safe with her people. Sweetie can be a little shy when you first meet her, as she’s still learning who she can trust in this world. She would do best in a home that is quiet and chaos free, where she can take some time to decompress. She does play well with other dogs here but it’s unknown how she does with cats. This pretty girl is just 1.5 years old and deserves so much more than this life has given her so far. 10/5 - Sometimes fun wins out over fear and that’s what our little girl Peppermint is learning! This darling kitten is just about 6 weeks old and is just beginning to explore the world around her! She has three siblings (all hiding under that tower 😓) and she is certainly the bravest of the bunch! Playtime is a super important part of a kittens socialization- especially if they’re shy! It can help them feel brave enough to poke around more and build their confidence. Peppermint will need lots of playtime and patience from her adopters before she feels safe in her new home! She would love to go home with one of her siblings or at least to a house with another nice kitty willing to show her the way. 10/3 - Look at this beautiful puppy!! 😍 Isn’t she stunning?! It’s Toph! She’s a gentle and shy 2-month-old puppy with so much love waiting to bloom. 🌸🐾 Toph may need a little patience and encouragement while she discovers her confidence, but with a loving family by her side, she’ll soon learn that the world can be a safe and happy place. 10/2 - Red Dawg came to us after his guardian passed away. It was a hard transition for him, but a very special family saw through his sadness and helped him write his next chapter. 9/28 - It’s Monday again, but never fear, Miss Millie is here!! 😍 Millie has been waiting for her person since December 2024. That’s far too long for a dog with so much joy to share. Will you help us get her story in front of the right person? At 5½ years old, Millie is bright, curious and wonderfully happy. She loves being outside, playing with toys and ending the day with a good back scratch. Her one blue eye, one brown eye and bouncy little ears make her hard to forget. 💙🤎 She has a lust for life that earned her the reputation of being a wild girl! Millie has worked hard with our staff and a trainer since arriving as a stray. She’s made progress at mastering the art of staying calm and she’ll need an experienced adopter who can keep helping her learn. She’s a strong girl who plays hard, and she loves her toys! 9/25 - Topper is feeling fresh this Friday morning! 🐾 He’s brushed himself and he’s looking as dapper as ever. Now he just needs some place to go! This handsome tuxedo cat is just 4 years old and was brought to the shelter after his guardian passed away 😞 He struggled with some sadness when he first arrived, but his resilient spirit is now shining bright ✨ Topper LOVES people and loves attention!
