BC SPCA Sunshine Coast Branch

Our Mission

The mission of the BC SPCA is protecting vulnerable animals and mobilizing communities so animals and people thrive together. We are here to ensure that every animal in our care has the opportunity to live a happy, healthy life alongside the people who love them.

Our Commitment to the Sunshine Coast

Located in Sechelt on the unceded territory of the shíshálh (Sechelt) Nation and Coast Salish peoples, our centre serves as a vital community hub for animal welfare. We are a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting both the animals and the people in our community who care for them.

How We Care for Animals

As part of a provincial network, our animal centre provides a safe environment for homeless and abused animals until they are ready to find their new families. Our dedicated staff and volunteers perform medical assessments, provide vaccinations, and ensure every animal receives the care they need to thrive. Whether you are seeking a new companion or need assistance with your own pet, we are here to offer support.

Your Adoption Journey

We believe that adopting a pet is a joyful partnership, which is why our team conducts thorough assessments to understand each animal’s unique personality and temperament. By focusing on successful matches, we help ensure a seamless transition for you and your new furry friend. When you adopt from us, you are gaining a lifetime companion who has been supported by professional care every step of the way.

Take Action Today

10/25 - Something we come across often is pet owners not knowing they need to register their pet’s microchip after it’s been implanted. Many pet owners think that’s done automatically. Learn more about how microchips work here: https://bcpetregistry.ca Or email us at info@bcpetregistry.ca

10/24 - 🦇 Happy International Bat Week🦇 International Bat Week is a celebration of bats and their importance to ecosystems and communities. So, we’re marking International Bat Week by separating fact from fiction. First up: the misconception that "all bats are thriving in British Columbia." ⚠️ Please note that bats are known to carry rabies in B.C. and should never be touched with bare hands. Contact your doctor, veterinarian or local public health authority immediately in cases of direct contact with a bat.

10/22 - 46 animals. All arriving at once. Every one of them needing safety, care and a fresh start. Last week, BC SPCA animal centres and barns opened their doors to 22 cats and kittens, 22 ducks, one sheep and one goat after their guardian experienced an unexpected change in living arrangements. With no place to take their animals, their guardian made the compassionate decision to reach out for help, knowing each one would be safe and cared for. Caring for so many animals takes an incredible amount of care and resources. Today, you can help give them everything they need as they begin their next chapter. ❤️Read more about their story, and help: https://spca.bc.ca/give/emergency-rescue/ (link in bio)

10/22 - Meet Ben! Ben is a young, high-energy Husky/Shepherd mix with a big heart and a love for affection. He can get a little bouncy when excited, but he’s quick to settle down when he’s getting pets and attention. He loves long walks and playing fetch, and would be an excellent companion for an active guardian! He’s curious about other dogs but needs a slow and calm introduction before he feels comfortable spending time with them. He knows plenty of tricks, is fully housetrained, and doesn’t mind being left alone while you’re at work (so long as you give him plenty of playtime when you get home!). Ben will show off his husky voice if he’s feeling left out, so apartments with thin walls may not be the best environment for this chatty boy. Ben would thrive in an active home that can provide him with regular outdoor adventures and enrichment. He has a lot of love to give, and would be a fantastic hiking buddy or camping companion. He would likely be fine with older children, but he may be too jumpy for little ones prone to being knocked over. ❤️ Meet Ben today! Link in bio! 📍: #VancouverBC

10/19 - This beautiful young eagle came into care thin and dehydrated. It was very likely that she had been orphaned. After receiving a thorough assessment, blood work, and supportive care at Wild ARC, she was transferred to OWL in Vancouver to continue building her strength and flight conditioning in their ample flight pens. Thanks to the dedication of wildlife rehabilitators at both centres, this eagle made a remarkable recovery. Now, she’s back where she belongs, soaring the skies of Esquimalt once again! ❤️ Every release is a reminder of what’s possible when a community comes together to help wildlife in need. Thank you to everyone who played a part in this eagle’s journey from rescue to freedom. Watch as she takes flight and returns to the wild! 🦅✨

10/18 - 🐾Welcome back to Halloween Hazards with the BC SPCA! 🐾 Pets can choke on hard candies and chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats. That’s why it’s important to store candy in a spot where your pet won’t be tempted to chow down. Pets can still enjoy treats made especially for them on Halloween. Check out your local pet supply store or dog bakery for Halloween-themed treats that your pet will love!

10/14 - Staff and volunteers across multiple BC SPCA locations have been caring for a large group of cats who were rescued in late summer. 37 cats and kittens were removed from a property cluttered with garbage and feces. The home wasn’t fit for any animal or human to be living in. Heartbreaking conditions caused by hoarding behaviours led to suffering for all those involved. Hoarding is a complex mental health condition. As you read this story, please hold compassion in your heart for both the animals and people who found themselves struggling under the weight of this challenging situation. 💗Read their full story and contribute towards urgent care for animals in need like these cats and kittens today: spca.bc.ca/give/animal-emergency (link in bio)

10/14 - 👻 HALLOWEEN HAZARDS 👻 🎃 While many people love to dress up, go trick-or-treating or attend Halloween parties, it can be a tough time for our pets. From loud, unpredictable fireworks to a non-stop ringing doorbell heralding people in costumes. The sensory overload can be stressful for our furry friends and frightened animals are more likely to run away from home. When a pet is stressed, they may show out-of-character behaviour, sometimes biting or scratching people. Planning ahead for your pet will give them a better chance of being happier and calmer during the festivities. 10/12 - Your community's animal control bylaw can make the difference between preventing problems or responding after the damage is done. Yet many communities across B.C. rely on outdated or ineffective bylaws that don't adequately support public safety, responsible animal care, and animal welfare. Sign the petition calling for stronger animal control bylaws across British Columbia: spca.bc.ca/advocate/2026-local-election And remember to get out and vote on October 17 at the local government election.

10/12 - UPDATE: WE’RE ALL STOCKED!! Thank you for your generous donations of browse! 🦌 Our Deer Fawns Need Your Help! 🦌 The deer fawns in our care are growing incredibly fast and are just a couple of weeks away from release! As they prepare for life in the wild, their appetites are growing right along with them. While they certainly enjoy the carrot treats you see them munching in the video, healthy deer need a diet rich in natural browse. To keep these youngsters well-fed and properly nourished, our dedicated staff and volunteers are working tirelessly to collect two whole truckloads of fresh browse every single day! We're hoping our community can help us keep these hungry fawns happy and healthy. If you live in the VICTORIA BC area, we are currently looking for long, leafy branches of: 🌿 Fruit trees (apple, plum, cherry, etc.) without the fruit 🌿 Willow 🌿 Salmonberry 🌿 Oceanspray 🌿 Maple 🌿 Aspen and birch To help protect our deer from disease, we ask that all branches be harvested from overhead height rather than collected from closer to the ground. Are you doing any pruning this fall? We'd love to take those branches off your hands! Your yard trimmings could make a huge difference for these growing fawns as they prepare for their return to the wild. 💚
