There is something of an animal services crisis in Kern County. Dogs and cats are dumped on the sides of roads and at parks. Pets are surrendered, ill, and neglected. 11/2 - Dodger #A1258488 Neutered male, 7 months old, 39 lbs Dodger - 5 Things: *Very lovable and affectionate, gives lots of kisses *Friendly with adults, children, and dogs of all sizes *Calm for his age and walks well on leash *Loves balls, treats, and car rides *Wonderful in the bath Dodger arrived at the shelter with several siblings on 9/17, and almost two months later, he's still waiting for someone to notice him. This was his very first @kcasstreetsofbako Doggy Day Out, and he was an absolute delight! This sweet boy was friendly with everyone he met and absolutely adored the children. He's surprisingly calm for a puppy his age and walks beautifully on leash despite having little experience with one. He enjoys car rides (he'll need a seatbelt!), loves treats, and gives plenty of kisses. Dodger is also fantastic with dogs of all ages and sizes. He seems to match their play style perfectly, whether that's roughhousing with a rowdy pup, playing gently with a younger dog, or simply hanging out with an older canine friend. He loves chasing a ball, although he's still learning to bring it back. He also enjoys climbing up on things like chairs, rocks, and even plastic totes! He's wonderful in the bath, too. One thing to know: Dodger is not housebroken yet and will need help learning. This lovable boy has so much to offer and is getting overlooked. Please don't let him grow up in a shelter. Dodger needs a loving home NOW! 11/1 - Amelia #A1258484 Female, 6 months old, approximately 35 lbs Amelia - 5 Things: *Spunky, playful puppy with plenty of personality *Sweet, loving, and generous with kisses *Loves belly rubs and affection *Friendly, social, and playful with other dogs *Confirmed good with older children (10+) Amelia is a fun-loving puppy with an adorable mix of playful energy and sweet, snuggly affection. She loves to play hard, especially with other dogs, and her enthusiastic play style can include some impressive body slams! She also enjoys playing on her own and knows how to slow down and relax when playtime is over. This girl is generous with kisses and loves belly rubs. She's confirmed to do well with older children, ages 10 and up. A home with a backyard would be wonderful for Amelia, giving her room to run, play, and enjoy all those puppy zoomies! Like any young pup, Amelia is still learning her manners. She's working on leash skills and can zigzag a bit, but it's manageable. When excited for attention, she sometimes forgets to keep all four paws on the ground. She can get a little mouthy, but redirects easily, and she's still mastering potty training. She has also shown curiosity about cats through a fence, so her compatibility with them is unknown. Amelia is a loving, energetic puppy who will thrive with a family ready to help her learn while embracing all the fun, affection, and puppy silliness she has to offer. Playgroup: Walks on leash, friendly with handlers, and friendly and social with other dogs. Enjoys playing with other dogs as well as playing independently. 10/30 - Four dogs. One family. And a race against time to find them safe places to land. It's sometimes difficult finding a home for one dog among the sea of shelter dogs, but four? That's going to be a challenge. Still, I've got to try! With your help, maybe we can get this family the second chance they deserve. All four came into the shelter together as owner surrenders for "escaping" on 10/14/26. It makes me wonder if they may have spent much of their time outdoors. They do not have to be adopted together. Each dog can be adopted separately! Sadly, all four are now at risk because they have developed a doggie cold, also known as an upper respiratory infection (URI). They are currently receiving medication, and this condition is treatable. They need placement ASAP, though, and the time they have left is running short. An extension was requested, but the days are going by quickly. Meet the family: 🐶 Brownie #A1260004 1-year-old male, approximately 71 pounds. Friendly with people and okay with other dogs. 🐶 Sadie #A1260005 1-year-old female, approximately 45 pounds. Despite everything he has endured, this special boy remains incredibly sweet, goofy, and loving. He deserves the chance to finally feel safe, cared for, and cherished. Titus gets along well with other dogs, but he's more of a quiet observer than a social butterfly. He prefers to hang back, watch, and do his own thing. His volunteer has never heard him bark at the shelter, not even at dogs passing his kennel! He also knows how to sit and give paw, and one of his favorite things is playing with water. Titus has already been through so much. Now he deserves a home where he can relax, enjoy life's simple pleasures, and know he's finally safe. 10/30 - Rico #A1216996 Neutered Male, 1 year 10 months old, 53 pounds Short Version: Happy, Friendly, Goofy, Dog-friendly, Social, Affectionate, Ready for his forever family When, oh when, will this happy boy finally find his forever family? 💙 This is my second post for Rico, and he is still waiting for someone to choose him. Rico's story began back in 2025, when he and his sister, Marilyn Monroe, were adopted as puppies. Sadly, both returned to the shelter as strays in August 2026. The shelter tried to contact their owner, but no one came for them. Day after day, Rico and his sister waited for someone to notice them. ACW20 cared deeply for both and advocated for extra time when they became at risk. Eventually, Marilyn Monroe made it out into foster, but Rico was left behind. Rico is a happy, friendly boy who loves meeting new friends. He's been friendly with every dog he's shared a kennel with and has done well with other dogs. He is a lovable, goofy goober who deserves a family ready to give him the love and stability he's been waiting for. Just when it seemed like Rico's moment had finally arrived, he was adopted, only to be returned because the other dog in the home was mean to him. Through no fault of his own, Rico has been back at the shelter since October 20. Rico needs the right match and a chance to finally settle into a home of his own. Please like and share to help this sweet boy get noticed. His forever family is out there! Penny Lane is a squishy-faced shepherd mix with a sweet, gentle personality and the perfect balance of calm and playful. At just 41 pounds, this mellow girl is ready to find her forever home! Although nervous about getting into the car, she managed to get in and out on her own. She also walks very well on leash, and she may already be potty trained. 10/29 - Reuben #A1259219 Male, 3 years, 53 lbs Short Version: Sweet, Mellow, Affectionate, Knows sit, Positive past experiences with dogs, Urgent placement needed, URI Reuben is a sweet, mellow boy who needs help getting noticed. He arrived at KCAS on 9/30/26 and is now out of view in the second building, sick with a URI. Despite positive experiences with other dogs during the Streets of Bakersfield program and playgroup, Reuben was placed at risk after a report that he fought with his kennelmate. Unfortunately, no notes documented what happened, so the circumstances are unclear. A volunteer requested reevaluation and extra time for this deserving boy. When I spent time with Reuben, he was friendly, gentle, and simply wanted affection. He also knows how to sit on command. Reuben deserves to be seen as more than an undocumented incident. Please help Reuben by sharing his story and offering him a chance through adoption, fostering, or rescue before time runs out! 10/28 - Lilly #A1167724 Spayed Female, 4 years old, 55 pounds Lilly - 5 Things: *Sweetheart one-on-one *Loves human affection *Needs time to feel safe and loved *May be dog-selective *URGENT: Needs a safe placement Lilly is a sweetheart who deserves another chance. Her owner and primary caregiver passed away, and she was eventually surrendered to the shelter. Her older intake number suggests she may have been there before, though her earlier history is unknown. I've spent time with Lilly, and I've seen firsthand how much she loves affection from people. One-on-one, she's a loving girl who needs someone willing to help her feel safe again. Lilly may be selective about her dog friends. She currently shares a kennel with a new kennelmate, but a previous kennelmate situation ended in a fight, and she did not do well with every dog in playgroup. Any introductions to other dogs should be slow and careful. Lilly may also thrive as the only dog in the home, where she can enjoy all the love and attention for herself.
