11/4 - Part-time teddy bear, Jude, is demonstrating his talent for gentle treat-taking — an art form that requires immense patience, impressive self-control and the ability to resist gobbling up the goods. And as you can see, he’s a natural. But that’s not his only talent! Jude is also potty trained and has had cat friends (talk about a well-rounded guy). Jude (941607) is available for adoption at our Oceanside Campus, where he’s ready to show his next family his treat-taking talents in person. And who knows? Maybe he’ll even share a few samples.

11/2 - We’re classifying this as the Best Day Ever in recorded history because our beloved Drake has FINALLY been ADOPTED! After more than 800 days in care (yes, you read that right), Drake has found his people. ❤️ Drake first came into our care in July 2024, when he was just a year old. Now three, he’s spent nearly his entire life with us. But in that time, he’s come a long way. When Drake first arrived, he had some big feelings and needed help learning how to navigate the world around him. Thanks to our dedicated team, he’s grown into the happy, calm and well-mannered dog so many of us know and love today. He’s learned countless tricks, made friends with Girl Scouts, gone on K9 Adventures and even had his moment in the spotlight on the news. And through it all, he’s become a staff and volunteer favorite who’s captured so many hearts along the way. We couldn’t be happier that Drake’s next chapter is finally beginning with a family of his own. In the wise words of Drake, “Started from the bottom, now we’re here!” 🎶 Congratulations to the new family!

10/26 - Ghouls and ghosts aren't the only scares to be aware of this season! Trick-or-treaters, doorbells ringing and decor can be frightening (and hazardous) for our pets. Treat your pet to a happy Halloween with these trick-free tips: 🍬 Keep all sweets out of reach for pets, as they can be poisonous to animals. 🎃 Check that your pet's cute costume fits correctly and don't leave them unattended in their festive attire. If your pet doesn't like dressing up, consider a fun bandana instead! 🕯️ Watch out for decorations that could harm your pet, such as candles, glow sticks, electrical cords and smaller items that are choking hazards. 🏷️ Doors opening for parties and trick-or-treaters can create opportunities for escape, so be sure your pet has up-to-date identification, including an ID tag, license and microchip. 10/14 - When your pet growls or becomes protective of something they value, it can be concerning — especially when you’re not sure why they’re doing it. But resource guarding isn’t about being “mean”. It’s often a sign that your pet is worried about losing something they consider valuable. Resource guarding can look different from pet to pet and can happen around food, treats, toys, resting spaces or even people. In this episode of Ask a Trainer, we’re sharing ways to better understand resource guarding and help you manage these behaviors. For more tips and tricks, visit sdhumane.org/training.

10/14 - Lefty (993493) and Emmylou (990803), two of the horses from our Julian rescue, have clearly figured out the secret to a great friendship: swapping back scratches! The chestnut and dark bay are especially fond of each other, and judging by this moment, they know exactly how to hit the spot. Both are available for adoption at our Escondido Campus, and we’re rooting for happy new chapters for these two sweet friends!
