Mendocino Coast Humane Society

Our Mission

The Mendocino Coast Humane Society is dedicated to contributing to a better life for animals by providing a safe haven for the homeless and inspiring public awareness of their needs. We strive to prevent and alleviate animal suffering while working toward a future where every companion animal has a permanent, loving, and responsible home.

Our History and Commitment

Founded in 1987 by local residents who desired a no-kill alternative to county animal control, our organization has grown into a vital community resource. We serve nearly 96 miles of Northern California coastline with the dedicated support of an animal-loving community, staff, and volunteers.

How We Care for Our Animals

Our Adoption Center serves as a warm, secure environment, featuring comforts like heated indoor floors for dogs, a grassy exercise lawn, and our dedicated Kitty Cottage. We prioritize the well-being of our residents through high-quality care, including spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and microchipping for every adoptable animal before they leave our care. Our foster network is also a vital part of our mission, allowing shyer or younger animals to recuperate and socialize in a supportive home environment.

Finding Your Perfect Match

Adoption is a joyful partnership, and our experienced adoption counselors are here to help you find the ideal match for your lifestyle. Whether you are looking for a playful companion, a calm friend for your home, or a pet ready for beach adventures, our team understands the unique personalities and quirks of every animal in our care. We encourage you to visit our shelter or schedule a meet-and-greet to begin building a lifelong bond.

Connect With Us

Are you ready to meet your new best friend? We invite you to view our available animals on our website, fill out an adoption application, or visit us at our Fort Bragg facility Wednesday through Sunday. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our coastal animal companions.

10/12 - 💔 60+ DAYS WAITING. TWO BROTHERS. ONE WISH: TO STAY TOGETHER. 🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛ Meet Chase and Void, two sweet, affectionate 2-year-old brothers who have been waiting over 60 days for someone to give them a chance. Sadly, black cats are often overlooked in shelters. And when two black cats are hoping to find a home together, their chances can become even smaller. 💔 Chase and Void don’t know any of that. They don’t know why people keep passing them by or why they’re still here. All they know is that they have each other. These boys are incredibly sweet, affectionate, and deeply bonded. They love each other, and we’re hoping with all our hearts that they won’t have to be separated just to find a family. We’re not asking someone to adopt two cats. We’re hoping someone will see two brothers who deserve to spend their lives together. ❤️ Please consider opening your heart and home to Chase and Void. And if you can’t adopt, please share their story. Somewhere out there is a family with room for two. 🐾 📍 Mendocino Coast Humane Society 19691 Summers Ln, Fort Bragg, CA 95437 📞 707-964-7729 🌐 www.mendocinohumane.org #AdoptChaseAndVoid #BondedPair #BlackCatsMatter #AdoptDontShop #MendocinoCoastHumaneSociety

10/11 - Meet Jameson! 🐾❤️ This handsome 4-year-old boy is 68 pounds of love, silliness, and endless personality! Jameson is deaf, but he doesn’t let that slow him down one bit. He’s smart, affectionate, playful, and full of life. All he’s missing is a family to share it with. He’s already neutered and ready for his forever home. Jameson may not be able to hear you say “I love you,” but he’ll certainly feel it. ❤️ Please help us find this sweet boy the home he deserves. 10/9 - 💔 Five months in the shelter. At nine years old, Queenie deserves so much more. Meet Queenie, our beautiful 9-year-old red merle Australian Cattle Dog who has been waiting over FIVE months for someone to give her a chance. 🥹❤️ Queenie may be a senior, but don’t tell her that! This sweet 53-pound girl still has plenty of spirit. She loves people, walks beautifully on a leash, and absolutely loves playing ball! 🎾 She does have some mobility challenges, but that doesn’t stop her from enjoying life and having fun. What breaks our hearts is knowing that Queenie is spending her golden years in a shelter instead of a comfortable home with someone who loves her. And her adoption fee is completely sponsored! ❤️ She’s already spayed and ready to go home. We’re hoping someone will look past her age and mobility challenges and see the wonderful dog she is. Please don’t let Queenie spend another five months waiting. She deserves a soft bed, a loving family, and a place to call her own. 🐾💕 📍 Come meet Queenie! 10/9 - 🐾❤️ Meet Steven, our handsome, goofy German Shepherd! At just one year old, Steven is a big, silly boy with a heart full of love and enough personality to keep you laughing every day! 🥹 This gorgeous black and tan German Shepherd absolutely LOVES people. He’s sweet, affectionate, playful, and always ready for his next adventure. Steven is still young and learning his manners, so he’d love a family willing to spend some time training him and helping him become the best boy he can be. He’s already neutered and ready to find his forever home! We haven’t cat-tested Steven yet, so we’re not sure how he’d do with feline friends. ❤️ Steven has so much love to give. All he’s missing is someone to give it to. If you’re looking for a loyal, fun-loving companion who will make you smile every single day, come meet Steven! 📍 Visit us at: Mendocino Coast Humane Society 19691 Summers Ln, Fort Bragg, CA 95437 📞 707-964-7729 🌐 www.mendocinohumane.org #AdoptSteven #GermanShepherd #AdoptDontShop #MendocinoCoastHumaneSociety #RescueDogs

10/9 - 🐾💔 All their siblings have been adopted. So why are Acorn and Pumpkin still waiting? Meet Acorn and Pumpkin, two adorable 4-month-old German Shepherd mix puppies who are still hoping someone will choose them. 🥹❤️ One by one, they’ve watched their siblings leave the shelter with their new families. Now it’s just the two of them, still waiting for their turn. At just four months old, these babies should be discovering the world, learning what it means to be part of a family, and making memories in a loving home. We don’t want Acorn and Pumpkin to grow up in the shelter. 💔 Every week that passes is another week of puppyhood they spend waiting. Please consider opening your heart and home to one of these sweet pups. They deserve the same happy ending their siblings have already found. And if you can’t adopt, please SHARE! Their future families might be just one share away. 🐾❤️ 📍 Come meet Acorn and Pumpkin! 10/7 - 🚨 URGENT: CUTIE PIE NEEDS A FOSTER HOME 🚨 We are running out of time. 💔 Cutie Pie has an upcoming leg surgery, and we desperately need a foster home where she can recover. A shelter kennel is simply not where we want her healing after surgery. She needs a quiet, comfortable place to rest, sleep, and recover with someone looking out for her. Cutie Pie has been fostered with children before and did wonderfully. Ideally, we’re looking for a home without other dogs or cats so she isn’t tempted to play while her leg heals. This is temporary. You don’t have to adopt her. You just need to give her a safe place to land while she recovers. ❤️ Please, if you have a quiet home and can foster Cutie Pie, contact us as soon as possible. And if you can’t foster, PLEASE share this post. The right person may be one share away. At MCHS, every animal gets a fair shot. We don’t euthanize for time or space—we focus on personalized care and positive outcomes. Our dogs enjoy heated floors, cozy beds, outdoor playtime, and lots of love from staff and volunteers. As a privately run, nonprofit, and no-kill shelter, we rely on your support. Please consider donating or becoming a monthly sponsor. Link in bio. 10/7 - 💔 Despite our pleas, Cutie Pie still doesn’t have a foster home. Her leg surgery is coming up, and we desperately want her to have a quiet, comfortable place to recover instead of having to come back to the shelter. Cutie Pie needs a temporary foster home where she can rest, heal, and be kept calm while her leg recovers. Ideally, she needs to be the only pet in the home so she isn’t tempted to play or overdo it after surgery. She has previously been in a foster home with children and did wonderfully. ❤️ Please, if you have a pet-free home and can give Cutie Pie a safe place to recover, contact us. And if you can’t foster, sharing this post could help us reach the person who can. 🙏 At MCHS, every animal gets a fair shot. 10/3 - 🐾 Meet Lemmy! 🐾 Hi! I’m Lemmy, a very handsome 3-year-old boy. ❤️ I’m looking for a forever family of my own. I’m a smart, affectionate guy who loves learning new things, going for walks in my harness, and most of all, giving kisses. I’m also starting to discover that this whole “playing with a ball” thing is actually pretty fun. I’m already neutered, microchipped, and up to date on my vaccines. I can still be a little nervous about car rides, so I’m hoping to find someone patient who can help me learn that adventures in the car aren’t so scary. I haven’t been introduced to other dogs yet, and we’re still learning how I feel about cats and kids, so slow, thoughtful introductions will be important. I have so much love and loyalty waiting for the right person. Maybe I’ve been waiting for you. ❤️ At MCHS, every animal gets a fair shot. We don’t euthanize for time or space. We focus on personalized care and positive outcomes. Our dogs enjoy heated floors, cozy beds, outdoor playtime, and lots of love from staff and volunteers. 10/1 - 💔 Nine months. That’s how long Auto has been waiting. For nine months, Auto has watched people walk past his kennel and leave with other dogs. Sadly, we think part of the reason he keeps getting overlooked is because the Auto you see behind the kennel door isn’t the dog our staff knows. Auto doesn’t show well in his kennel. But take him outside, give him a little time, and you meet a completely different dog. ❤️ Auto is a 2-year-old, 84-pound German Shepherd mix who is incredibly smart, food motivated, and eager to learn. Our staff has worked extensively with him, and he knows all his commands and picks up new things very quickly. He would be an amazing companion for an active person, especially someone with a large property or land where he can run and explore. Auto needs to be the only dog in the home and cannot live with cats. His adoption fee is completely sponsored. Nine months is a long time for a young dog to wait. We just need someone to look beyond the kennel and give Auto the chance he deserves. Please share him. 💔 At MCHS, every animal gets a fair shot. We don’t euthanize for time or space—we focus on personalized care and positive outcomes. Our dogs enjoy heated floors, cozy beds, outdoor playtime, and lots of love from staff and volunteers. 10/1 - Meet Christmas 🤍 Christmas is a sweet 9-year-old senior girl who has been waiting for her home for over two months now. Every day, she sits by the window of the Kitty Cottage, watching the world outside and hoping that maybe today will be the day someone comes to take her home. She originally came to us with a leg injury, but she’s all healed up and ready to start her next chapter. Christmas is incredibly sweet and docile, loves to cuddle, and is an absolute purring machine. She loves being doted on and is happiest simply being close to her humans. She’s also done well with the other cats in the Kitty Cottage. We would love nothing more than to see Christmas leave the shelter behind and spend her golden years in a peaceful, loving home where she can nap in sunny windows, cuddle with her people, and get all the love and attention she deserves. Please come meet Christmas. She’s been waiting patiently for her person to find her. 🤍 #AdoptChristmas #SeniorCat #AdoptASenior #AdoptDontShop #MendocinoCoast

9/30 - 🚨 URGENT: FOSTER NEEDED FOR CUTIE PIE 🚨 We are desperately looking for a foster home for our sweet girl Cutie Pie. ❤️‍🩹 Cutie Pie is going in for leg surgery and will need a quiet, comfortable place to rest and recover afterward. A shelter is simply not the ideal place for a dog trying to heal, and we would love nothing more than to know she has a cozy bed and someone looking after her while she recuperates. We are preferably looking for a home without cats or other dogs, mainly because Cutie Pie needs to stay calm and we don’t want her tempted to play while her leg is healing. She has previously been in a foster home with children and did wonderfully with them. She is such a sweet girl, and right now she just needs someone willing to open their home to her during a time when she really needs it. If you have a quiet space and it’s in your heart to foster Cutie Pie, please contact us. Even a temporary home could make such a difference for her recovery. 🙏❤️ Please share. 9/30 - 🐾 Say hello to Twitchy! 🖤 Twitchy is a 3-year-old mellow, affectionate girl with a wonderfully curious personality. She loves spending time with her people, but she also has an independent streak and enjoys setting off on her own little adventures to investigate whatever catches her attention. During her time at the shelter, Twitchy has preferred to keep her distance from the other cats, so we think she would be happiest as the only cat in her home. She seems fairly nonchalant about dogs, and a quieter home without small children would likely suit her best. Twitchy has previously lived as an indoor/outdoor cat and would appreciate a home where she can continue having some safe outdoor access. She’s affectionate without being overly demanding, independent without being aloof, and just a very charming little character. ❤️ Twitchy’s adoption fee is $100. Come meet her and see if she might be your girl! At MCHS, every animal gets a fair shot. We don’t euthanize for time or space—we focus on personalized care and positive outcomes. 9/30 - Update: ADOPTED 🤎 Meet Cappuccino 🤎 Cappuccino, formerly known as Prince, is looking for a new beginning after his owner sadly passed away. He’s a 4-year-old Shepherd mix with a beautiful fawn and black tricolor coat. Cappuccino is incredibly sweet, affectionate, smart, and loves being close to his people. He’s the kind of dog who wants to be part of your life and will happily settle in for some cuddles. 🥹 Cappuccino has lived with cats before and doesn’t seem to mind them. As always, we recommend slow, thoughtful introductions when bringing any new animal into a home with existing pets. He is already neutered, and his adoption fee is completely sponsored, so there is no adoption fee for his new family. After losing the person and home he knew, we would really love to see Cappuccino find someone who will give him the security, affection, and companionship he deserves. Come meet this very sweet boy. 🤎 At MCHS, every animal gets a fair shot. We don’t euthanize for time or space—we focus on personalized care and positive outcomes. 9/30 - 🖤 Two little puppies are still waiting for someone to notice them. We still have two adorable black puppies looking for their forever homes. We don’t know exactly what breed they are, but we expect them to grow into medium-sized dogs. They’re sweet, cute, and pretty quiet, and unfortunately, that may be part of why they keep getting overlooked. They aren’t the puppies making a lot of noise or demanding attention when people walk through the shelter. They’re just quietly waiting. Black dogs can also have a harder time getting noticed in shelters, and we would hate to see these two spend their puppyhood growing up here. They deserve to learn what it’s like to have a home, a family, a cozy bed, and someone who chose them. 🖤 If you’ve been thinking about adding a puppy to your family, please come meet them. Sometimes the quiet ones just need someone to stop and take a closer look. At MCHS, every animal gets a fair shot.
