Hayward Animal Services Bureau
Our Mission
At Hayward Animal Shelter, our mission is to provide services that establish and maintain a safe environment for our city residents while working to eliminate animal cruelty, neglect, and overpopulation. We are dedicated to advocating for the humane and responsible treatment of all companion animals.
Who We Are
As an open admissions shelter and a division of the Hayward Police Department, we proudly serve our community by sheltering thousands of stray animals each year. Our team is committed to being a progressive organization that embraces modern industry practices to facilitate animal welfare, safety, and community outreach.
How We Care
We provide a secure, safe haven for animals regardless of their age, breed, temperament, or medical condition. Beyond our facility, we actively support animal welfare through programs like foster care, TNR services for community cats, and initiatives to reduce pet overpopulation.
Finding Your New Best Friend
Adoption is a joyful partnership, and we are here to help you find your perfect match. Our adoption process ensures that all members of your household—including your current pets—can meet and bond with your potential new family member to ensure a successful transition for everyone.

Whether you are looking to adopt, volunteer, or participate in our fostering programs, there are many ways to get involved. Please visit our website to view our currently available animals or contact us at 16 Barnes Ct, Hayward, to learn more about how you can make a difference today.

The Hayward Animal Services Bureau named a few kittens up for to adoption after some of NBC Bay Area’s reporters and anchors.
10/1 - Bruce was already a great pup while in the shelter but with his amazing foster he has grown even more impressive! He has been perfecting his skills learning commands like box box to go in his kennel, stay, and remaining calm while passing exciting new things while out on walks. Not only has Bruce been polishing up his skills, but also his manners and confidence, preparing to show off for his furrever family. He has been a regular attendee at our adoption events impressing people with his puppy eyes for treats and love for people just as much as other dogs! Why he is still searching for a home four months later? We aren’t sure either! If you’d like to get to know more about Bruce and possibly set up a meet & greet contact us @ 510-293-7200 #dog #dogtraining #cutepuppies #puppy

9/23 - 8 month old Raj is a herding breed mix who is undeniably a lover of the outdoors! He enjoys rolling around in the grass, stopping to be pet, receiving compliments on how handsome he is, and sniffing the fresh air. While he can be shy with certain new things, when he sees his leash there’s nothing but tail wags. Raj may be young but he is already showing what a great walking partner he can be. He walks nicely on leash, catches onto cues quickly, and is happy to patiently wait or stop when you need him to. He is recommended for a home with teens and up, and has done well meeting other dogs at the shelter. With his smarts and love for the outdoors Raj is ready to find a family he can join on all of life’s adventures! #adventure #outdoors #hikingbuddy #herdingdogsofinstagram #herdingdog

9/17 - Another one in the books! 🐾 What a day. Thank you to everyone who came out to @Birdhausbeergarden for our 6th Annual #ProjectBestFriend . Seeing so many familiar faces, new faces, families, pups, and people just hanging out and enjoying the afternoon made this one really special. A huge shout out to Birdhaus for welcoming us back, and to all of our vendors and small businesses who brought the food, treats, drinks, shopping, and awesome vibes all afternoon. And THANK YOU to everyone who showed up with donations for @haywardanimalshelter . Every bag of food, toy, treat, and pet essential will help give a little extra love and comfort to animals waiting for their furever homes. To everyone who adopted, donated, shopped, grabbed a beer, took a photo, brought their pup, or simply came by to support us, thank you for being part of it. 6️⃣ years of #ProjectBestFriend and we still love seeing what happens when good people come together for animals who could use a little more love. Until next year!💖 #vibesandsmiles #adoptdontshop #unioncityca
