Lionel's Legacy

Our Mission

Lionel’s Legacy is dedicated to creating a legacy of compassion, advocacy, and education through saving senior dogs. We believe every senior sweetheart deserves a loving home where they can thrive and feel like a true member of the family.

Our Story

Our journey began in 2011 when we fostered a 15-year-old dog named Lionel, who overcame incredible adversity to show us the resilience of the senior spirit. We soon realized that many senior pets end up in shelters due to circumstances beyond their control, such as owner illness or financial hardship. We are committed to helping these wonderful companions enjoy their golden years with the dignity and care they deserve.

How We Care

We are a foster-based organization located in East County San Diego, which means our senior dogs live in loving homes rather than a traditional shelter facility. By providing necessary food, supplies, and medical care, we ensure our senior residents receive the personalized attention they need while awaiting their perfect match. Our wellness center also allows us to provide specialized support for seniors within our community.

Finding Your Perfect Match

We pride ourselves on thoughtful matchmaking to ensure our dogs and their new families build a bond that lasts a lifetime. Our adoption process includes a two-week foster-to-adopt trial period, giving you and your potential new friend the time needed to settle in and ensure a perfect fit. We provide all adopters with up-to-date medical history and the ongoing support of our dedicated team.

Join Our Family

Are you ready to meet your new best friend? We invite you to browse our available senior sweeties on our website or join us at one of our upcoming adoption events or community strolls. Please fill out an adoption application to get started, and a member of our team will be in touch to help you find your perfect, loyal companion.

10/3 - She's baaaaack bitches! 🎤⬇️ Welcome the new and improved JADE!!!! Jade has been with us for almost two years. She joined us from the @sdhumanesociety with her two sisters. They were originally removed from the home where multiple animals lived, they were completely undersocialized, and some were so sick they had to be euthanized. It took weeks for Jade to trust anyone to even touch her. She became reactive and aggressive to every animal she met. It took lots of time, patience, and behavioral interventions to show Jade what it's like to be a real dog and to trust. There were so many moving parts and people in her journey. It would have been so easy for everybody to just throw up their hands and keep passing her around. The thing is, we knew there was a beautiful shining diamond if we could just chisel away at the coal. Thank you to Joyce and Jen for being her foster moms. Jen put a tremendous amount of time and work in with her. To Peggy for helping us with beginning trust exercises, thank goodness Jade is treat motivated! And thank you to @devotiontodogs for helping us take the next and final steps to addressing her arousal and reactivity. It takes a village and we are surrounded! Jade's finals story ends with a FAMILY!.THIS GIRL IS SO FUN! SHE LOVES TO PLAY AND WOULD BE AN AMAZING ADDITION TO A YOUNG OR ACTIVE FAMILY! Jade is about 6-8 yrs young! FIll out an app today! www.lionelslegacy.org

10/2 - Yesterday was a busy day, we welcomed not 1 but 4 senior sweeties to @lionels_legacy while also running a low-cost dental clinic! And... all 4 were seen by our medical team too! Please welcome Lucy, Pammy, and Scully from @ocanimalcare and little Earl from @seaaca We chose all 4 seniors because they were RED-LISTED, that means scheduled for euthanasia. Lucy, the tan chihuahua, has some lameness in her front leg, but otherwise appears healthy. Pammy, it has a little bit of the snuffles. Her lab work was actually not too shabby except for a pretty high WBC count and bad skin. Once she's feeling better she's cleared for a dental and really needs one. Scully is pretty sick with a wicked upper respiratory infection, so we are hitting her hard with antibiotics and fluid therapy. And lastly we have little black and white Earl who was brought to the shelter and then triaged through a local emergency center for difficulty standing. He is doing well considering and labs aren't too shabby, some mild kidney changes. THANKS TO THE FREE TO CHEW CLINIC, each pet costs approx. $775-$800 for basic care including, an exam, labwork, medications, a dental, and a month of food. Comparably, this costs the rescue a minimum of $1,600-$2,000 elsewhere. THE BREAKDOWN: Exam: $75 (to pay our staff) Labs: $100 to send labwork and urine to Antech Intake Medications and topicals for skin, ears, eyes, infection: $50 Dental: $500 Food: $50-$75(kibble and @lionelslunchbox) For all 4 new sweeties, the total cost to lionelslegacy is $3,100. Please help us get started and consider donating to their exams, labs, and medications, which we performed within an hour of arriving! 😍 To donate towards their medical care please go to: 💸 Venmo to LionelsLegacy 💳 https://lionelslegacy.org/make-a-donation/ 📬 Lionel's Legacy 11937 Woodside Ave. Lakeside, CA 92040 🏦 Zelle to: LIONEL'S LEGACY INC. laura@lionelslegacy.org Tax ID 46-1123304 Thank you so much!

9/21 - Please welcome Luna to @lionels_legacy Luna is a petite, 5-6 yr old GSD who joined us through our Always HOME program after her family struggled to provide care for her. Thanks to TEAMWORK from @Stavgeffner and @curls2therescue , sweet Luna is getting a fresh start and an opportunity to blossom. After a behavior evaluation we believe Luna just hasn't been set up for success so thanks to the ladies at C2TR they are helping to provide training support to Luna and her foster family while we work on her medical issues. GSD's are their specialty and since Luna is a little younger than we normally consider, we knew that with our combined efforts we could get her on the right track. Next enters her foster family who is equally as committed to seeing her blossom and grow! Look for more updates on Luna soon! Sometimes these middle aged dogs get overlooked and they are often the best balance between puppy and senior! www.lionelslegacy.org
