Lionel’s Legacy is dedicated to advocacy, education, and saving senior dogs. We believe in creating a legacy of compassion for every senior sweetheart who enters our care.
Our History
Founded in 2011, our organization began with the rescue of a 15-year-old dog named Lionel. His inspiring will to thrive despite his circumstances opened our eyes to the unique needs of abandoned senior pets, leading us to champion the beauty and resilience of older dogs.
How We Operate
Lionel’s Legacy is a foster-based organization, meaning we do not maintain a central boarding facility. Instead, our senior dogs thrive in loving foster homes across the San Diego and Orange County areas while they wait for their forever families. We provide comprehensive medical care, nutritional support, and the comfort of a home environment to ensure every dog feels like a beloved family member.

10/29 - Home Away From HOME- Ariel FREE 60-day emergency boarding program Last week a young man reached out to us feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Like so many personal stories we've heard lately, PEOPLE ARE STRUGGLING! It's absolutely heartbreaking to get call after call, it feels like a bad dream, people are losing their jobs and consequently their housing. The only thing they have left is their beloved canine companions, the last thing they want to do is give them up. Our Home Away From HOME Program identifies people who need a little bit of time to figure things out. Ariel's dad called us from the shelter parking lot, he had tried everyone he knew and was feeling helpless and stricken with grief at the idea of surrendering his girl. It makes my heart and stomach sink just replaying our conversation and hearing his voice over tears, begging for help. Thanks to an amazing foster and back-up fosters, we were able to offer him a temporary option within minutes. Ariel has been with us for over a week and we are working on getting her spayed while in our care. Her dad has been in touch with foster mom and is working tirelessly to get a new job and housing. Ariel is just the sweetest girl and they deserve to stay together! We are happy to play a role in making that happen. www.lionelslegacy.org

10/27 - Behind every rescue is a dedicated individual or family! Whether you foster, volunteer, adopt, donate, transport, come to our clinic, or share our posts, YOU, are part of our @lionels_legacy FAMILY! WE CAN COUNT ON ALL OF YOU TO BE THERE! Not just for the animals but for each other, and that is what makes us strong and helps us keep going each day! From emergency shelter requests, owner surrenders needing urgent placement, pet owners needing financial assistance, and families needing temporary care for their pets, LIONEL'S LEGACY WILL BE THERE! We thank all of you for being there for the ones who have been left behind when their humans face unforseen events. You don't differentiate your love and care because they joined us later in life. 10/26 - Please welcome Lucy to @lionels_legacy "Lucy belonged to my grandmother, who recently passed away. We’ve been caring for her, but there have been ongoing fights with our other pets, and our home isn’t a good fit for her. No one else in the family can take her long-term, so we’re hoping to find a calm, loving home where she can spend her remaining years comfortably. " Life isn't perfect and loved ones try their best, sometimes, rehoming is the best answer. Here's what we've learned about little Lucy so far: Meet Lucy, the 10-pound senior sweetheart who is completely defying the aging process! She is looking for a loving home where she can relax and enjoy the good life. Lucy is truly an easy-going dream dog. Here is why you’ll fall in love with her: • Zero Shedding: She is non-shedding, meaning your clothes and furniture stay clean. • Fully House Trained: No accidents here! She knows exactly where to do her business. • Dog-Friendly: She gets along great with other calm dogs, whether they are big or small. • Sweet & Gentle: She has a lovely, mellow personality that will bring so much joy to your home. 10/26 - @lionels_legacy is helping to kick-off SAVING SENIOR DOGS WEEK! October 25th-31st, 2026 Over the last seven years, the Saving Senior Dogs Week network of partnering senior dog rescues has consistently grown each year and now includes 🎉 37 🎉 senior dog rescues (and counting) that are located all across the country. 🐾What does this mean? 🐾 We will be spending the week helping to raise awareness and funds for the SSDUSA nonprofit which helps connect senior dog orgs across the country, is a resource for senior dog pet owners, and raises funds for senior dog rescues who are doing the hard work every single day around the country! 10/23 - Please welcome Peaches to @lionels_legacy Peaches is about 10 years old and joined us urgently from OC Animal Care after being treated for an upper respiratory infection. Being a Pom and the recent URI strains we've seen coming out of OCAC, we really didn't want to mess around. We immediately got her scheduled for an echocardiogram and had to start her on rescue medications. We know how cute she is, and everyone will want her, but her prognosis isn't great longterm and she will need daily medications. As a result, Peaches needs a FOREVER FOSTER or an ADOPTER who can maintain all of her medications. We have already seen a drastic improvement with them on board. WE ALSO NEED MONTHLY SPONSORS FOR HER MEDICATIONS! For as little as $5 a monthly you can help us continue to provide her life saving medications. So far she has 3! 10/22 - UPDATE: Sir Craigory Crazy Leg Carlton Craigory may look like a Jimothy 2.0 but this boy is all canine! He has regained his ability to walk and go potty outside. Our amazing foster families share duty through our foster cluster program. Next week, Craigory is heading to the neurologist to see if there is anything that we can do to stabilize his spine and set him up for long term success. Stay tuned...
