LA Animal Services is dedicated to promoting and protecting the health, safety, and welfare of both animals and people. We strive to create a humane Los Angeles by providing compassionate care and fostering meaningful connections between pets and their forever families.
Our History
Established in 1863, our department has spent over 150 years evolving to meet the needs of our community. We are proud to be one of the largest municipal shelter systems in the United States, operating six award-winning facilities across the city.
How We Care
Our shelters are managed by dedicated teams of animal care technicians and licensed veterinary professionals who provide medical care, enrichment, and love to approximately 60,000 animals annually. Beyond shelter walls, we rely on a robust community of foster parents and lifesaving partners to help animals thrive while waiting for their perfect homes. Our proactive programs, like our Pet Food Pantry and mobile rescue teams, ensure we support pets and the people who love them in every neighborhood.
