LA Animal Services promotes and protects the health, safety, and welfare of animals and people. We are dedicated to creating a more humane Los Angeles where every pet and family can thrive together.
Our History and Commitment
Established in 1863, our department has spent over 150 years working to improve animal welfare in our community. We are one of the largest municipal shelter systems in the United States, and we take our responsibility to the animals in our care—and the people who love them—to heart.
How We Care for Our Animals
We operate six animal shelters across the city, where teams of dedicated animal care technicians, veterinarians, and registered veterinary technicians oversee the wellness of the pets in our custody. From orthopedic surgery to high-volume spay/neuter services, our medical team is equipped to provide comprehensive care. Beyond the shelter, our field staff and Specialized Mobile Animal Rescue Team work around the clock to support animals in need throughout our city.
