Our Mission

Our mission is to transform the lives of cats and dogs by enriching the human-animal bond through respected and accessible expertise. We believe all people, regardless of their background or access to resources, should be able to experience the joys of the human-animal bond.

A Legacy of Compassion

Founded in 1874, we are proud to be one of the oldest shelters in the country and one of the most innovative in our region. As an independent local non-profit, we are not affiliated with any national organization, ensuring that our resources remain dedicated to the specific needs of our community.

How We Care for Animals

We are much more than a shelter, acting as a hub of support for both animals and their people. While in our care, every animal receives expert medical attention, professional behavior training, and plenty of loving attention and socialization to ensure they are ready for their next chapter.

Finding Your Perfect Companion

We love bringing humans and animals together, and our dedicated team is here to guide you through every step of the adoption process. Whether you are looking to adopt or simply want to learn more about our methods, we prioritize transparency and care to ensure every animal finds the perfect, loving home they deserve.

9/23 - Come on a field trip with Oreo! 🥾🐾 Oreo recently traded the shelter for the trails and spent the day exploring with one of our volunteers and a canine hiking buddy. This goofy and energetic 2-year-old Pittie mix had plenty of new sights and smells to take in, stopping to sniff along the way and occasionally checking in on everyone like a good hiking buddy should. After an hour on the trail, he was one happy, tired pup and snoozed the whole ride back. 💤 For active shelter dogs like Oreo, getting out for a field trip is more than just a fun day away. A change of scenery gives them a break from the shelter routine and a chance to explore, decompress and enjoy some one-on-one time with a volunteer. There’s another bonus to hitting the town in the signature “Adopt Me” gear: More people get the chance to meet them and see just how great they are! ❤️ 🌟 Want to take a shelter dog like Oreo on a field trip? 9/18 - Tiny but mighty! 💪🐾 Basia and her brother, Buckley, were just 2 weeks old when a Good Samaritan rescued them and brought them to East Bay SPCA. Basia arrived with a severe infection in her right front limb, and our Shelter Medicine team began treatment while the Good Samaritan stepped in to foster the tiny siblings. Despite antibiotics, wound care and close monitoring, Basia’s injury wasn’t healing. The damaged limb was causing discomfort and beginning to hold her back during an important stage of her development. Surgery became the best option, but at just 0.7 pounds, Basia was smaller than the usual minimum weight for a procedure like this. After carefully weighing the risks, our Shelter Medicine team decided it was time to move forward. Basia became the tiniest patient they had ever operated on. ❤️ Her injured front leg was successfully amputated, and it quickly became clear how much the surgery helped. Basia recovered well and finally had the chance to focus on the important business of being a kitten! This tiny but mighty girl has done a lot of growing and is now ready for her next adventure: finding a home! 🐱 🌟 Basia is available for adoption at our Dublin Adoption Center. Click the link in our bio and visit our “Adopt” page to learn more about her and other adoptable pets.
