Oakland Animal Services

Our Mission

Oakland Animal Services is dedicated to providing vital public safety and animal welfare services to the community. We are here to support Oakland’s residents while promoting responsible pet ownership and humane care for every animal that needs a second chance.

Who We Are

As Oakland’s only open-admissions shelter, we proudly welcome all of the city’s homeless, lost, and mistreated animals, regardless of their age, breed, or condition. We serve as a critical resource for our city, providing care to thousands of animals each year through our dedicated staff and professional shelter environment.

How We Help

Our work is made possible by our committed team of volunteers and our partnership with the Friends of Oakland Animal Services (FOAS). We operate a comprehensive shelter system and work within a supportive foster program to ensure each pet receives the care they deserve while waiting for their forever homes. As a participant in the Human Animal Support Services (HASS) coalition, we strive to keep pets and their families together whenever possible.

Adopting a new family member is a life-changing experience that enriches both your life and the animal's future. Our staff and volunteers are deeply committed to the thoughtful matching process, ensuring that we help you find a companion who perfectly fits your lifestyle and unique needs. Every adoption represents a fresh start and a bond built on love and trust.

10/12 - A plea for Harley - this young lady entered our doors and her spirits deteriorated almost immediately. Some dogs just don’t enjoy or tolerate shelter living and Harley is one of them. She’s been reactive to other dogs at the shelter and will be best as a solo dog in the home, with adopters committed to helping her stay calm around other dogs. We realize this is a tall order. We also hope that her guardian angel is out there. Help us find that person! #oaklandanimalservices #adoptoakland #harley #pitbullawarenessmonth

10/9 - Meet THE ADOPTABLE ARCHIE 😍 His foster boasts about how amazing he is and his affectionate personality. He’s food motivated, takes treats very gently, and picks up new skills fast 🤩 ✅ Crate & house-trained! Although he is comfortable being left alone, Archie would love a person who’s up for a walk or a short hike and can keep training fun with rewards along the way. He can be a bit anxious in new places until he settles, so he does best with adopters who go slow and use plenty of encouragement! 🐶 He participated well in playgroups and is currently in foster with a small dog. He’d thrive as the only pet or paired with a calm, well matched dog friend, and does best without feline 🚫🐱 roommates. #AdoptMe #AdoptDontShop #RescueDog #FosteringSavesLives #DogsOfInstagram

10/5 - We expect you to be drawn in by puppy Simpson’s good looks. We’re mesmerized by his soulful eyes and innocent charm. Bear in mind he’ll be a big boy! At 4 months old and 30lbs and growing, this bully mix is looking for a committed adopter. One who will guide him through his life phases: Teething and potty-training, adolescent rebellion, boundary-testing, the energetic adult years—and eventually, the slower senior years when he may need a little extra care, patience and support. Simpson will need training, socialization, exercise, veterinary care, patience, structure and plenty of time. And when that tiny puppy body becomes a big, strong adult dog, he’ll still need you just as much. We’re looking for someone ready for the work, the responsibility and the lifelong love—not just the cute puppy part. If you’re ready to grow old with Simpson, he’s ready to grow up with you. 🐾 Apply to meet him in foster!
