The Humane Society of Ventura County boldly ensures the welfare of animals in our community through dedicated shelter, adoptions, and comprehensive care programs. We are committed to providing a safe, compassionate environment where every animal in our care receives the love and respect they deserve.
A Legacy of Compassion
Founded in 1932, our organization has grown from the vision of a dedicated group of animal lovers into a vital refuge. Nestled in the picturesque hills of the Ojai Valley, our 4.4-acre property serves as a safe haven for animals in need, supported entirely by the generosity of our community.
How We Care
We operate as a compassionate care shelter, providing medical treatment, nutrition, and socialization to help our animals thrive while awaiting their forever families. Beyond our shelter walls, our HSVC Cares program actively supports the broader community by offering low-cost spay and neuter services, free vaccination clinics, and a pet food pantry to help keep beloved pets with their families. We believe in building stronger communities by removing barriers to veterinary care.

10/10 - Do you know that look your dog gives you when you get home? Pure joy with their tail wagging a mile a minute. Nova hasn’t experienced that for 712 days. For almost 2 years Nova hasn’t felt the joy of seeing her person come home and that breaks my heart. Nova is an affectionate girl who is smart as a whip. She is going to make someone happy every time they walk through the door. She makes me laugh, she gives the best kisses and I can’t wait to see what lucky person gets to add her to their family. 9/29 - Imagine spending two years of your life waiting. Nova has been at the shelter for almost 730 days.Two years of being passed by, two years of loud barks, and two years of sleeping on a shelter bed. So many people say, “I could never foster, it hurts too much to say goodbye and bring them back.” But here is the truth: saying goodbye is hard for us, but staying in a kennel for two years is much harder for Nova and dogs like her. Fostering isn’t about feeling sorry for these animals, it’s about giving them a break and sometimes saving their lives. Even if a foster home is just for a weekend, a week, or a month, it gives Nova a vital break from shelter life. It means she gets to sleep on a soft bed, hear a quiet TV, and remember what it feels like to be a normal dog. You aren’t “giving her back”—you are giving her a breath of fresh air and a stepping stone to her forever home. Can you open your heart and home?
