Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe

Our Mission

The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe is dedicated to saving and improving the lives of pets through adoption, community spay/neuter services, and humane education programs. We believe in the power of compassion, generosity, and ingenuity to create a brighter future for every animal in our care.

Our Story

Founded in 1994 by a group of committed volunteers, we have grown from a grassroots effort into a nationally recognized non-profit organization. Today, we serve as the driving force in animal rescue and adoption for the Truckee region and beyond, acting as a vital resource for our community.

A Dedicated Haven

Since 2013, our partnership with the Town of Truckee has allowed us to operate a beautiful, modern animal shelter that provides a clean and comfortable space for pets awaiting their forever families. We are proud to save 100% of our community's adoptable homeless pets, while also rescuing animals from overcrowded shelters whenever space allows.

Your Partner in Adoption

We believe that finding your perfect match is a joyful journey, and we are here to guide you every step of the way. Our supportive, comprehensive process matches your unique lifestyle with an animal’s personality to ensure a lasting bond. We provide transparent information about an animal’s health and behavior, ensuring you have the clarity you need to bring a new friend home with confidence.

Find Your New Best Friend

Whether you are searching for a high-octane sidekick or a mellow snuggle buddy, we have many wonderful animals waiting to meet you. We invite you to visit our shelter in Truckee Monday through Saturday or browse our adoptable animals online today to start your new adventure.

9/16 - Here’s what $0 gets you at our shelter. ❤️ Meet Charlie! He’s 7 years old and our longest-term cat. After waiting this long, this incredibly loving boy deserves his second chance. Charlie is SO, SO, SO affectionate. He loves getting pets, curling up in your lap, and soaking up all the attention he can get. One of his favorite ways to greet you? Flopping over and showing you his belly. He’s just a total lovebug. ✨ Charlie’s adoption fee is sponsored, so his fee is $0! A few important things to know: Charlie is FIV-positive, so he needs to be the only cat in the home. He also needs to be indoor-only.
