A Second Chance for Every Pet

The Humane Society of Fremont County is dedicated to ending animal homelessness and providing care and comfort to companion animals in need. We believe that Where Every Life Matters, each animal deserves the safety, respect, and love required to thrive.

Our History and Community

Since our founding in 1950 by Cañon City advocate Ralph J. Wann, we have remained an independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We are proud to serve Fremont and Custer County, working tirelessly to support the health and well-being of the pets that share our community.

Our Open-Admission Promise

As a proud open-admission shelter, we never turn away an animal in need, regardless of their background, breed, or medical condition. We provide a safe, nurturing environment where pets receive medical care, socialization, and compassionate support while they wait for their forever families. We are committed to transparency and high standards, operating under the regulation of the Pet Animal Care Facilities Act (PACFA).

The Joy of Adoption

Adoption is a life-changing journey, and our goal is to ensure you find the perfect partner for your lifestyle. We encourage you to visit us to meet our current residents in person, where our staff will guide you through the process of building a new, happy life together. When you adopt, you are not just getting a pet—you are gaining a cherished family member.

Connect With Us

Ready to meet your new best friend? We invite you to browse our current list of adoptable dogs and cats online or visit us at our Cañon City facility. Your support, through adoption, volunteering, or donations, makes our mission of providing a second chance at life possible.
