The mission of the La Plata County Humane Society is to protect, return, and rehome vulnerable pets in our community. We are dedicated to helping pets and people, one paw at a time.
Founded on compassion in 1971, we have been protecting pets in La Plata County for over five decades. We serve our community by providing vital shelter and rescuing those in distress, striving to bring justice for pets in jeopardy.
As an open-admission shelter located in Durango, our dedicated team of 50 staff and over 300 volunteers assists more than 6,000 animals each year. We accept all pets from within La Plata County, regardless of their circumstances, ensuring every animal receives a safe space and a pathway toward a brighter future.
We believe in the power of a joyful partnership between pets and their new families. Our experienced counselors use a personalized matchmaker process to help you find a companion that fits your lifestyle, ensuring a lasting and happy transition for both you and your new best friend.
Give a deserving animal a second chance at happiness by visiting us in Durango or browsing our adoptable pets online. Whether you are ready to adopt, foster, or volunteer, there are many ways to get involved and make a difference. We look forward to connecting you with your new family member!
