Our Mission
At Second Chance Humane Society, we are dedicated to improving the lives of animals by fostering the human-animal bond. We believe in the power of compassion, action, resourcefulness, and integrity—our core values, which we call CARIng.
Serving Our Community Since 1994
For over three decades, we have proudly served Ouray, San Miguel, and Montrose counties. By addressing the needs of homeless pets and developing effective medical and educational programs, we provide vital support to both the animals in our care and the people who love them.
Our Approach to Care
Our operations are centered at Angel Ridge Ranch, a beautiful 52-acre property near Ridgway, Colorado. Our cats thrive in social, enriched environments within our ranch house, while our canine residents enjoy a thoughtfully designed space at Smitty’s Dog Den, featuring outdoor runs, play areas, and access to exercise and socialization.

7/1 - Animal shelter evacuating due to Gold Mountain Fire - Ouray County Plaindealer
Second Chance Humane Society is evacuating today due to the Gold Mountain Fire now burning east of Ridgway. The shelter, located on County Road 10, is outside the mandatory evacuation area, but is experiencing poor air quality and lost its water service to the shelter and clinic this morning, according to Executive Director Nicholas Gilman.
