Protectors of Animals is a non-profit, primarily volunteer, no-kill organization dedicated to increasing the quality of life for all dogs and cats in the communities we serve. Every pet that enters our care is treated as an individual and guaranteed a safe, loving future, no matter their past.
Formed in 1975, we have grown into one of the oldest and most respected animal welfare organizations in the Northeast. We focus our expertise and resources entirely on our home state of Connecticut, ensuring we remain a dedicated and thorough resource for the animals in our own backyard.
We provide a supportive, no-kill shelter environment and rely on a network of dedicated volunteers to get to know each animal’s unique personality. Our dogs are housed in private kennels in the Hartford area, while our cats reside at our shelter in East Hartford, where our staff works tirelessly to address their medical and social needs.
We take a deeply personal approach to adoption because we believe in finding the perfect, permanent match for both you and your new pet. Our placement team spends significant time understanding your lifestyle, household, and experience, ensuring that every adoption is a joyful, lifelong success story. We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts and paws for opting to adopt!
Ready to meet your new best friend? We invite you to browse our current list of adoptable dogs and cats on our website and submit an application to begin the process. We are here to offer advice and support every step of the way as you welcome a rescue animal into your home.
