Alaqua Animal Refuge
A Legacy of Second Chances
Alaqua Animal Refuge is dedicated to providing shelter, safety, and second chances to animals in need while maximizing the healing power animals have on the human spirit. Our core belief is that every abused, neglected, and homeless animal deserves a life filled with hope, happiness, and love.
Our Journey and Vision
Since our founding in 2007, Alaqua has grown into the Southeast’s premier no-kill refuge and sanctuary. We are currently embarking on an ambitious expansion to create a one-of-a-kind, 100-acre facility that will serve as a national model for animal rescue, cruelty prevention, and humane education.
How We Care for Our Animals
We operate a unique, no-kill refuge that provides professional, dedicated care to hundreds of animals, including dogs, cats, horses, and farm animals. Our work is powered by a compassionate community of staff and volunteers who handle everything from daily physical care to complex surgeries funded through our Special Needs Medical Fund. We are committed to transparency and high standards of animal welfare in every aspect of our operations.
Finding Your Perfect Companion
Adoption is not just a service—it is our passion, and we take great care in matching the perfect pet with the right family. Our adoption coordinators are here to guide you through the process, ensuring that your new companion is a wonderful fit for your home and lifestyle. We welcome you to join our growing family of adopters and become part of a movement that builds a kinder, more empathetic world for all living souls.
Join Our Community
We invite you to visit our refuge, meet our adoptable animals, and discover the joy of giving a deserving pet a forever home. Please explore our website to view available animals, review our simple adoption guidelines, or discover other meaningful ways to get involved. Your support helps us continue our lifesaving work every single day.

10/6 - September brought more second chances, new beginnings, and hopeful moments to Alaqua Animal Refuge. 🐾💚 Every animal who receives care, finds comfort, or takes a step toward a brighter future is a reminder of what’s possible when a community comes together. Thank you for helping make these moments possible!

9/30 - Twenty-three cats came back with us from Brewton. Seventeen of them are finally ready for what they’ve never truly had: a home. ❤️ They came from a 22-foot trailer where more than 25 cats were confined together in a single bathroom. Some had spent years knowing little beyond those walls. Now they have soft beds. Full bowls. Room to stretch. And, for the first time, the chance to be someone’s beloved pet. To help them get there, we’re extending our cat adoption special all week long. Our community showed up when they needed saving. Now we’re asking you to show up one more time. Seventeen cats. Seventeen second chances. Seventeen homes still waiting to be found. 🐾
