Our Mission
The Caloosa Humane Society is dedicated to serving, sheltering, and protecting the homeless pets in our care. We strive to provide a compassionate, no-kill environment where every companion animal can find a permanent and loving home.
A Legacy of Compassion
Founded in 2001 by Cornelius “Kees” Huijer, our organization was created to serve the pets of rural Hendry and Glades counties. His vision established a foundation of care that continues to thrive today, supported entirely by our community through donations and fundraising rather than government funding.
How We Care
As a committed no-kill shelter, we provide comprehensive care for animals who are lost, abandoned, or injured while they wait for their new families. Our facility, located in LaBelle, Florida, offers a safe, temporary haven where pets are rehabilitated with the help of dedicated staff and passionate volunteers.

10/11 - 🐾💕 SHE SPENT HER DAYS BEING THEIR MAMA… NOW IT’S HER TURN TO BE SOMEONE’S BABY. 💕🐾 Meet Sophia, the incredible mama who gave everything she had to her eight precious puppies. 🥹❤️ Sophia and her babies were rescued from underneath a storage container, where she had been doing everything she could to keep her little family safe. Here at Caloosa Humane Society, we watched Sophia raise all eight of her babies with so much love, patience, and devotion. She made sure they were fed, safe, and cared for. She asked for nothing in return. ❤️ But now, it’s Sophia’s turn. 🥹 Her puppies are getting their chance at happily ever after, and this sweet mama deserves that same opportunity! After spending so much time taking care of others, Sophia deserves someone who will take care of HER. A warm bed, a loving family, endless snuggles, and a home where she never has to worry again. 💕 And trust us, Sophia is MORE than ready for all that affection! 😂❤️ She absolutely LOVES being petted and can be a little demanding when you stop! Once you start loving on her, she expects you to keep going! 🥰 Sophia has been a protector, a provider, and an incredible mama. But underneath it all is a sweet girl who just wants to be loved. She spent so long being someone else’s whole world. 10/10 - 🐾💕 MEET PRECIOUS — YOUR SWEET & STRIPED SOULMATE! 💕🐾 Almost a year and a half in the shelter. Almost 4½ years old. And STILL waiting for someone to choose her. 🥹💔 Precious is a beautiful classic tabby with gorgeous markings, a heart full of love, and just the right amount of sass! ❤️ Precious came to Caloosa Humane Society as an owner surrender alongside another cat. Her feline companion has since found a loving forever home, but sadly, Precious was left behind. 💔 And we just can’t understand why! 🥺 This sweet girl LOVES affection! She’ll rub her head against you, soak up your attention, and even give you little kitty kisses! 🥰 But Precious is also an independent lady who appreciates her personal space when she’s had enough. A little sweetness, a little sass, and a whole lot of personality! 😂❤️ And let’s talk about those treats… 🤭🐟 Precious might love her kitty snacks a LITTLE too much! She’s carrying a few extra pounds, but we like to think she’s just got a little extra love to give! 😂 A few less treats and a little more playtime wouldn’t hurt! But behind those beautiful stripes and that sassy personality is a cat who has spent nearly a year and a half watching other animals find their families while she continues to wait. 💔 Precious doesn’t need a perfect home. She just needs someone who will love her exactly as she is, appreciate her affection, and respect her independence. 10/9 - 🐾💙 Meet Fluffy! 💙🐾 Just look at that happy face! 🥹 Meet Fluffy, an adorable little guy who is roughly 1 year old and ready for a fresh start. Fluffy was recently owner surrendered alongside his friend Cookie, a female around the same age. Their previous owner became ill and was unfortunately no longer able to care for them, so her son made the difficult decision to surrender them so they could have the opportunity to find loving new homes. ❤️ Fluffy is a smaller dog with a whole lot of personality packed into that little body! He and Cookie have been together, and while they do not have to be adopted as a pair, we would absolutely LOVE to see them find a forever home together if the right family comes along. 🏡🐾 Two little best friends getting to start their next chapter side by side would be pretty special. Fluffy is not yet neutered and will need to be neutered prior to adoption, but interested families can still come meet him and submit an application in the meantime. 10/8 - Meet Frick! 🐾 At 8 years young, Frick has perfected the art of looking like he's judging everyone in the room... but don't be fooled by that grumpy old man expression! Behind that serious face is one of the sweetest, most loving cats you'll ever meet. 🥹❤️ ✨ Frick's favorite things: 💕 Being pet (the more, the better!) 💕 Cuddling up with his favorite humans 💕 Being the center of attention 💕 Soaking up all the love he can get This handsome 13-pound gentleman has spent 196 days waiting at the shelter, and we think that's 196 days too long. He dreams of a cozy home where he can be spoiled, adored, and treated like the king he knows he is. 👑🐱 If you're looking for a loyal companion who will happily curl up beside you and remind you daily that he deserves all the attention, Frick is your guy! 🏡 Give this sweet old man the retirement home he deserves.

10/7 - 🐾🩷 Meet Cookie! 🩷🐾 Meet Cookie, a sweet little girl who is roughly 1 year old and looking for a family to call her own. 🍪❤️ Cookie came to us alongside her friend Fluffy after their previous owner became ill and was no longer able to care for them. Her son ultimately made the difficult decision to surrender the pair so they could have the chance to find loving homes where they can be cared for and cherished. Cookie is a smaller girl, and she and Fluffy have already shared so much of their young lives together. While we can adopt them separately, we would be absolutely thrilled if someone had room in their heart and home for both Cookie AND Fluffy. 🥹🐾 Keeping these two friends together would be wonderful if the right home is out there! Cookie is not yet spayed and will need to be spayed prior to adoption, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait to fall in love with her! Interested families can come meet her and submit an application while she waits to become adoption-ready. Whether Cookie finds her forever family on her own or gets lucky enough to leave with Fluffy by her side, what matters most is that this sweet girl gets the loving second chapter she deserves. 🩷🏡 Come meet Cookie—you might just discover that one Cookie is sweet, but Cookie + Fluffy might be even sweeter. 🐶🐶💕

10/6 - Meet Thina, a beautiful 2-year-old black cat who is quietly hoping her soulmate is out there. When I began volunteering, I was told Thina was the cat you didn’t know was there, she always hides in her hole, it was a miracle if you ever saw her out in the room. I have been working with her every time I visit the shelter. I have a soft spot in my heart for Thina. She has started to come out in the room, I find her laying on the bed, I play with her, I pet her to get used to people again, to let her know affection is okay, she is now found laying on the cat towers, and lets me pick her up. She is still unsure of life outside of the cat room, she will need some time to find her place in your home but oh boy when she does, I believe she will give you so much love. And she so deserves it! 💖 Thina is a shy, gentle girl who feels safest tucked away in her cozy cat cave, watching the world from her peaceful little hideaway. But once she learns she can trust you, she slowly begins to open up, and when she does, she truly enjoys soft pets and gentle scratches. She came to the shelter as an owner surrender alongside her companion, Loki, and has now been waiting for over 7 months, that’s over 234 days, for someone to see just how special she is. Thina may take a little time to blossom, but for someone patient and kind, the reward is a deeply sweet and loving companion. She doesn’t ask for much, just a calm space, a little understanding, and someone willing to let her come out of her shell at her own

10/5 - 🐾 Meet Sterling! 🖤🎾 Just look at that happy face! Sterling is a handsome 2-year-old Labrador Retriever weighing about 68 pounds, and he is ready to trade shelter life for a family of his very own. 🏡❤️ Sterling was transferred to Caloosa Humane Society from an animal control facility, giving him a new opportunity to be seen, loved, and ultimately find the forever home he deserves. Now it’s our turn to help this sweet boy find his person! Sterling is a young, playful guy who absolutely LOVES getting outside, stretching those legs, and chasing a ball. 🎾 Give him some room to run and you’ll quickly see that big, goofy Lab smile come out! 10/4 - 🐾 OUR KITTEN ROOM NEEDS YOU! 🐾 Our kitten room is FULL of sweet little faces waiting for someone to choose them. 🥹❤️ As much as we absolutely love having these babies in our care, what we want more than anything is to see them growing up in homes of their own — not inside the shelter. Every week, our kittens get a little bigger. And unfortunately, we know that as kittens grow into adult cats, it can become much harder for them to find homes. We don’t want to watch these babies grow up at the shelter simply because their forever families never saw them. They deserve homes. They deserve families. They deserve sunny windows, cozy beds, toys scattered across the floor, and people who get to watch them grow. 🏡🐱❤️ If you’ve been thinking about adding a kitten to your family, please come meet ours. 10/3 - 🐻🤍 MEET LUNA BEAR — AND HER FRESH START! 🤍🐻 Our beautiful 5-year-old Great Pyrenees came to Caloosa Humane Society needing some extra TLC. Luna’s coat was severely matted and heavily infested with fleas. We tried shampooing, conditioning, detangling and carefully working through the mats, but ultimately, the safest and most comfortable option was to shave her down and give her skin a fresh start. Underneath all that fluff, we discovered a skin infection, areas of broken skin and sores on all four feet. Thankfully, she tested NEGATIVE for heartworms! 🙌 She was immediately treated for the active fleas and started on monthly flea, tick and heartworm prevention. Because her coat had to be shaved to the skin, one of our wonderful board members donated XXL UV-protective shirts to protect her during outdoor time while her beautiful coat grows back. ☀️🐾 And at 92 pounds, Luna definitely isn’t lacking in the weight department — she’s giving full-on bear hibernation vibes! 😂🐻 But what has impressed us most is her incredibly gentle spirit. Through everything, Luna has been an absolute angel. She was so relaxed during her shave that she actually fell asleep in our board member’s lap. 🥹🤍 Luna’s story isn’t about how she arrived — it’s about where she goes from here. Her skin will heal. Her feet will heal. Her gorgeous Great Pyrenees coat will grow back. With time, patience and lots of love, we know her transformation will be remarkable. Luna will need to be reevaluated by our veterinarian and medically cleared before going home, but applications can be submitted in the meantime! And there’s one more BIG part of her story… Luna was surrendered alongside her brother, Phoenix, a magnificent 133-pound Akbash! 🐾 We’ll introduce you to this big guy soon! For now, send Luna Bear some love as she begins her fresh start. 🐻🤍🐾

10/2 - 🐾 PUPDATE: LOOK HOW BIG THEY’RE GETTING! 🐾 Remember the little crew rescued from underneath a shipping container in Montura? 🥹❤️ Well, those tiny babies are now 13 weeks old, and just look at them having the BEST time playing together in the yard! 🐶☀️ All 8 puppies — 6 boys and 2 girls — are growing like weeds, and that means it’s time to start finding these babies their forever homes! 🏡🐾 As much as we love watching them grow, they’re quickly outgrowing their puppy kennels. Our shelter is currently FULL, and we simply don’t have another available room or enough open kennels to separate this growing crew as they get bigger. That’s where we need your help. ❤️ If you’ve been thinking about adding a puppy to your family, now is the perfect time to come meet these sweet babies! 10/2 - 🖤🐾 IT’S NATIONAL BLACK DOG DAY! 🐾🖤 Today, we’re giving some extra love and attention to the beautiful black dogs waiting for their forever homes at Caloosa Humane Society! Sadly, black dogs are often overlooked in shelters, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as “Black Dog Syndrome.” Whether it’s because darker coats don’t stand out as easily in kennels or photographs, old superstitions, or simply being passed by for more colorful pups, these amazing dogs deserve their chance to shine. ✨ And trust us… there is SO much to love! 🖤 From laid-back cuddle bugs to playful, energetic personalities, from little pups to big ol’ teddy bears, wonderful dogs come in every shape, size, personality… and color! So today, we’re shining the spotlight on our beautiful black-coated pups and reminding everyone to look beyond the color of the coat and meet the dog underneath it. 10/1 - 🐾 MEET CURIOUS GEORGINA “CG” 🐾 With a name like Curious Georgina, you already know this little girl has some personality! 🥹🩷 CG is an adorable 19-week-old kitten who has been waiting at the shelter for 76 days—that’s more than half of her little life spent hoping her forever family will find her. CG is a petite girl at just 3.6 pounds, with the prettiest tortoiseshell coloring and those big, curious eyes that make it nearly impossible not to fall in love. 🐱✨ She came to us as an owner surrender and is now ready for the next chapter of her life—the one where she finally gets to call somewhere home. She’s been vaccinated, microchipped, and is waiting patiently in Cat Room 4 for someone to come meet her. ❤️ At only 19 weeks old, CG should be growing up in a home—chasing toys, exploring every corner, curling up somewhere cozy, and learning exactly how spoiled a kitten can be. 🥰 📍 Come meet Curious Georgina at Caloosa Humane Society! 🐾 Female | 19 weeks old | 3.6 lbs 🏡 Waiting 76 days and counting… Let’s make sure she doesn’t have to spend another 76 days waiting. 9/30 - 🐾 A quick peek at some of our newest faces! 🐶❤️ These sweet newbies will be available for adoption soon once they’ve been evaluated by our vet and completed their necessary spay/neuter and medical care. And when we say we have all kinds, we mean ALL kinds! 😂 We currently have pups ranging from less than 10 lbs all the way up to 133 lbs! From Jack Russell mixes and Boxer mixes to Black Labs, an Akbash, and plenty of adorable mystery mixes in between… you name it, we probably have it! 🐕🐾 Some of these new arrivals were transferred to us from outside animal control facilities, while others were sadly owner surrendered. No matter how they got here, they all have one thing in common: they’re waiting for their chance at a forever home. ❤️ And right now, we are truly busting at the seams. Every adoption—whether it’s one of our longtime residents, a new pup, or one of our amazing cats—opens up a space that allows us to help another animal in need.
