Athens Area Humane Society - Main Shelter

Our Mission

The Athens Area Humane Society rescues and protects companion animals by providing for their wellbeing, uniting them with loving homes, and advocating for a compassionate society. We believe in a future where all dogs and cats have a loving home and the bond between pets and people is celebrated.

Our Community Commitment

We work to create a more humane society by supporting the pets and people who need us most. As a socially conscious community shelter, we operate with the vital goal of saving lives and keeping animals safe and sound.

How We Help

Our work is made possible by a dedicated team of staff, volunteers, and foster families who provide a loving, safe environment for animals in transition. Because we are a limited intake shelter, we work closely with local animal control facilities to rescue animals in need, while our clinics provide accessible, low-cost care and preventative health services for the public.

Finding Your Perfect Match

Adopting a pet is a beautiful, life-changing decision, and we are here to ensure that every placement is a thoughtful, lasting partnership. Our adoption counselors take the time to learn about your lifestyle, children, and current pets to help you find a companion who will thrive in your specific household.

Join Our Mission

Whether you are ready to welcome a new best friend into your family or want to support our life-saving work, there are so many ways to get involved. We invite you to view our adoptable pets online, visit our adoption center at 1030 Mitchell Bridge Road, or consider joining our community as a foster or volunteer today. Together, we can make an incredible difference in the lives of animals in the Athens area.

9/28 - 🧬 The Results Are In: What IS Tab? 🧬 The guesses have been submitted, the DNA has been analyzed, and we finally have an answer for what makes up 120+ pounds of our favorite couch potato. Drumroll please... Tab is 50% American Bully and 50% Great Pyrenees! Honestly, the combination of big-headed snuggle bug and oversized fluffy guardian makes a LOT of sense. Of course, this DNA journey started for a much more important reason. Tab was tested while we explored whether he could be a potential blood donor for doggos in need. We already knew our big boy was pretty special, but the possibility that he could help another pup while still waiting for a family of his own makes us love him even more. Check out the video from Tab’s foster family to learn a little more about the handsome man behind the DNA results and see the big reveal for yourself! And remember, Tab is still searching for his forever home, and his adoption fee is completely SPONSORED. If 50% American Bully, 50% Great Pyrenees, and 100% couch potato sounds like your kind of dog, submit an adoption application at www.athenshumanesociety.org to learn more and schedule a meet-and-greet! 🐾
