At Castoff Pet Rescue, we are dedicated to rescuing and nurturing homeless dogs and cats, matching companion animals with loving, lifelong homes. We believe every animal deserves a chance at love, and we strive to be their voice in our community.
Our Story
Founded in 2006, we began as a handful of volunteers fostering animals in their own homes before eventually transforming an old boarding kennel into our first shelter. In 2025, we reached a major milestone by moving into our new, purpose-built facility in Blairsville, Georgia, which allows us to provide even better care and expand our vital community programs.
Our Approach
As a nonprofit, no-kill organization, we serve Towns and Union Counties in Georgia, along with Cherokee and Clay Counties in North Carolina. Our work is powered entirely by the generosity of our donors, volunteers, and foster families rather than public funding. We operate through a dedicated network of supporters who manage everything from our shelter and thrift store to community outreach and specialized training programs.

10/19 - 📺🐦 MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: THE 4K TV SPARROW 🐾😹 Every bonded duo has their signature dynamic: one is the brains, and the other is the muscle. Meet foster sisters Livy (our serene grey thinker) and Jade (our fearless black panther)! While Livy is happy to sit back and calmly supervise, Jade takes bird-watching to an Olympic level. When the nature documentary came on the television, Jade decided it was time to step in. Wait for the tippy-toe stretch at the end! She was 100% convinced she could catch that sparrow right through the screen. 🥹 Both girls started out shy, but thanks to lots of love from their foster mom Andrea, they have blossomed into playful, sweet, purring cuddle bugs. 10/19 - 💔 CANDY’S ADOPTION UPDATE (all details @ bottom of caption) This morning, we watched her leave Castoff, hoping it would be the last time she ever had to walk back into a kennel. She got in the car. She had breakfast. She went for a walk. For a little while, we let ourselves believe that after four long years, Candy’s waiting was finally over. But an hour and a half into the drive, the adoption fell through. And Candy came back. Back to the kennel. Back to the life she has spent four years waiting to leave behind. We are heartbroken. We had hoped so badly that this was her moment. That this was finally the beginning of the life she deserved. Please, we are begging you. If you have room in your home and your heart, please consider adopting Candy. She needs to be the only pet in the home, but in return, you’ll have the chance to give a dog who has spent four years waiting the one thing she’s never had: a family of her own. Right now we have literal mountains of donations waiting to be sorted, and we just do not have enough people to keep up. 10/18 - I wonder if Wednesday knows how much of her life she’s spent waiting. 💔 She’s only 6 years old. And on October 25, she’ll reach a milestone no dog should ever have to reach. Three years in a kennel. Three years of waking up in the same loud place, watching the world go by from behind a door, never knowing when someone might finally come for her. And yet, when she gets outside she plays, she runs, she’s happy. There’s still so much life in this girl. It hurts to think that when she goes back into her kennel, she has no way of knowing when she’ll feel that freedom again. She can’t understand why she gets to experience happiness for a little while, only to be brought back to the same place she’s been for years. Wednesday is 6. Her life is passing by, and she’s spending it waiting for someone to see her. October 25 will mark three years in a kennel. Please, let this be the last milestone she reaches without a family of her own. If you can give her the life she’s been waiting for, please reach out about adopting her. 10/18 - Bear once lost the only home he knew. Yesterday, after a 920-mile journey, he found another. ❤️ When his owner passed away, Bear had no idea why his world had suddenly fallen apart. He found himself in a kennel, trying to make sense of a life without the person he loved. We couldn’t explain to him what happened. We couldn’t bring his person back. All we could do was promise to keep fighting until someone saw what we saw in him. That someone was Donald. Bear climbed into Donald’s car, and we knew this was the beginning of something beautiful. Yesterday, we drove 920 miles to give Bear the chance every dog deserves: to be loved again. Thank you, Donald and family, for showing Bear that losing one home doesn’t mean he has to spend the rest of his life without another. And thank you to everyone who shared his story and helped make this possible. You all are the reason Bear is home. There is one more thing Bear’s story has left on our hearts: please choose a legacy person for your pets. Someone you trust to step in if life takes an unexpected turn. Our animals depend on us for everything, including making sure they won’t be left without a family if we’re no longer here. May this home give you all the love you have been missing, Bear. ❤️

For months, Yogi Bear waited patiently in Kennel 2, leaning in for big hugs and hoping his special someone would come along. Today, that happily-ever-after officially began; and in the most incredible way! 🥹❤️ Yogi Bear was adopted by a wonderful family all the way in Wisconsin, where he is going to live on a beautiful 10-acre farm! To make his dream come true, our amazing volunteer Kendall packed up Yogi Bear (along with his absolute favorite plush Lamb Chop toy!) and hit the highway, driving over 500 miles from Blairsville, Georgia all the way to Springfield, Illinois to meet his new family halfway! 10/16 - PLEASE SHARE 💔 Poppy has been waiting for over two years. And now, she’s begging us not to put her back in her kennel. She isn’t injured. She isn’t being stubborn. She just doesn’t want to return to the place where she spends so much of her life waiting for someone to choose her. When Poppy gets out of her kennel, she gets to feel the sun, stretch her legs, receive affection, and remember what it feels like to be more than a dog behind a gate. But then the moment ends. And when it’s time to go back, she plants her feet and refuses to move. How do you explain to a dog that the love she just felt was only temporary? That the freedom she just tasted is over? That she has to go back to waiting for someone who may never come? How many more times will she have to walk back into that kennel before someone realizes she deserves a life outside of it? 10/16 - 🐾 Doggy Day Out: You Don't Know What You're Missing (Neither Did We!) 🐾 We knew Doggy Day Out was going to help our dogs, but we honestly didn't realize just how much! Our DDO volunteers have made a HUGE difference in our dogs' personalities. They're calmer, they load up for vet visits so much easier, and they genuinely appreciate not having to "go" in their kennels, which means our kennel staff loves it too! On the rare occasion a dog gets loose, we've actually been able to catch them quickly just by opening a car door. They love to go that much! 🚗 It's been so rewarding watching them blossom, and we love hearing the stories our volunteers come back with. Tractor Supply and Home Depot staff know our dogs by name at this point, chatting with folks about our shelter and our mission everywhere they go. Plus, being out and about means our dogs get to show off their personalities to potential adopters they might never have met otherwise! But we can't do any of this without you! Watching. Hoping. It sticks with you... because for so many pets, that's not just a commercial. That's real life. At Castoff Pet Rescue, we see it more often than you'd think — beloved dogs and cats suddenly without their person, confused and grieving in a shelter kennel instead of on a familiar couch. Not because they weren't loved. Because there wasn't a plan.
