Big Canoe Animal Rescue
Our Mission
Big Canoe Animal Rescue is a no-kill, all-volunteer organization dedicated to providing care, socialization, and forever homes for homeless dogs and cats in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. We strive to improve the lives of animals in need while promoting humane practices through community outreach and education.
A Legacy of Care
Established over 35 years ago by a group of passionate volunteers, our rescue was born from a need to help stray animals roaming the local mountains. Since those early days, we have grown from a few simple kennels into a dedicated facility that now cares for countless dogs and cats each year, backed by a network of over 300 volunteers.
Our Commitment to Every Pet
We believe in treating every animal as if they were our own family pet, ensuring they receive the very best veterinary care and affection. Our facility offers a comfortable environment for our dogs, while our specialized Maggie's House provides a dedicated space for our cats. Because we are an all-volunteer organization, we are proud that every dollar donated goes directly toward the medical needs, nutrition, and daily care of the animals in our shelter.
Finding Your Perfect Match
A successful adoption is a joyful partnership, and we are committed to helping you find the right companion for your lifestyle. We conduct a thoughtful, personalized matching process—including home visits and veterinary checks—to ensure that every rescue animal transitions smoothly into a loving, permanent home. We want your experience to be as rewarding as it is life-changing for our animals.

We invite you to visit us during our Saturday Open Houses to meet our available cats and dogs in person. Whether you are ready to adopt, interested in learning more about our outreach programs, or looking to join our volunteer family, we look forward to meeting you and sharing our mission.
