Our Mission

The Society of Humane Friends of Georgia is dedicated to rescuing, caring for, and finding loving, permanent homes for displaced dogs and cats. Since 1998, we have worked to build a community where every animal receives the second chance they deserve.

A History of Care

Incorporated as an IRS-approved 501(c)(3) nonprofit, our journey began nearly three decades ago in Lawrenceville, Georgia. We address the urgent needs of homeless, neglected, and abused animals by pulling them from county shelters, ensuring they transition from uncertain beginnings to happy, healthy futures.

Our Unique Care Model

Unlike traditional facilities, we operate through a dedicated network of volunteer foster homes, which provides our rescues with a warm, personal environment while they wait for their perfect match. This foster-based approach ensures each animal is fully evaluated and vetted, allowing us to understand their unique personalities and needs before they meet their new families.

Connecting Pets and People

We believe in the power of thoughtful matching. By carefully screening potential adopters, we strive to create lasting, joyful partnerships between humans and their new companions. Because we do not house animals at our adoption center, we schedule all meetings by appointment to ensure each family receives dedicated, one-on-one time with their prospective pet.

10/18 - Willie is one of the friendliest kittens we’ve had this year. This tiny boy is fabulous with everyone, two-legged or four. He is great with kids and completely confident around dogs. Despite his small size he is brave and full of personality. Willie is nosy and he likes to know what his people are up to at all times. He will follow you around the house like a puppy and hop in your lap to beg for attention. He is a funny, highly affectionate little fella. 10/14 - Hi, I’m Robin (I’m a boy) and I’m looking for a new nest. I am three months old and I’m a Beagle/Chihuahua mix. My mom weighs 21 lbs and my dad was smaller so I should be no more than 20 lbs full grown. I am a spunky, sweet pup and I’m looking for a family who will love me for the rest of my life. I am super smart and I’m doing great with my potty training. I’m ready for adoption this week and I can’t wait to meet my new people. The details about how to adopt me are below. Hope to see you soon! Love, Robin 🐾 SOHFGA is based in Lawrenceville, GA and all of our animals are in foster homes. We schedule meet-and-greets/adoptions by appointment with approved applicants. 10/3 - He’s literally got his arm around her….💕 Please share this post to help them find a home together. Sometimes animals stay in our care so long that they bond deeply with one of their fellow fosters. That’s exactly what has happened with this “odd couple” — Grandpa Zach and little Lilah. These two couldn’t be any more different but they have chosen each other and who are we to argue with love? Grandpa Zach has been with us for 1.5 years. His elderly mom has dementia and sadly the family who took her in said her animals couldn’t come along. Zach is about ten years old so he is a mellow, laidback gentleman who naps most of the day. Little Lilah came to us as a kitten in spring of 2025 so she has quite literally grown up with Zach. Both Zach and Lilah live in our communal cat room at our Adoption Center so they share their space with multiple other cats who come and go regularly. Months ago we started noticing that Zach and Lilah were nearly always together, cuddling up with each other for naps and frequently grooming each other. Zach is easygoing and friendly but Lilah has always been timid and shy with humans. Over time we’ve noticed that she is most readily approachable when she’s beside Zach. His presence calms her and gives her a boost of confidence. Age, size, personality — nothing about this quirky pair matches yet somehow it does. Zach and Lilah may be completely different on the outside but their hearts have connected perfectly. Their relationship is so special and sweet and we would be thrilled if these two could find a home where they could be together forever. See more photos and get more info about adopting Zach and Lilah at www.SOHFGA.com.
