Red Door Animal Shelter

Red Door Animal Shelter

Our Mission

Red Door Animal Shelter is a non-profit, no-kill organization dedicated to promoting respect for all animals through education, rescue, and adoption. We provide a safe haven for animals in need, with a special focus on the three most popular pets in the United States: cats, dogs, and rabbits.

A History of Haven

Founded in 1988, our organization has evolved from a small network of foster homes into a dedicated adoption center serving the Chicago area. We take our name from the historical symbol of a safe haven and the feng shui belief that a red door brings luck to those within, reflecting our commitment to the animals in our care. Since 2000, we have also pioneered an innovative rabbit rescue program, ensuring these unique companions receive the specialized attention they deserve.

Our Care Model

We believe in providing the closest-to-a-home experience possible for our residents. Our cats and rabbits enjoy a cageless environment at our adoption center, while our dogs are comfortably housed in foster homes until they find their permanent families. We are proud to be a 501(c)3 organization that operates solely through the generosity of private donations, allowing us to maintain our high standards of care and commitment.

The Joy of Adoption

Our adoption counselors strive to find the perfect match, ensuring both the right home for each animal and the right animal for each home. Every pet is spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vet-checked before adoption, so you can focus entirely on the excitement of bringing your new family member home. We are here to support you throughout the process, from initial inquiry to your life together.

Whether you are looking to adopt, volunteer, or support our mission, there are many ways to make a difference. We invite you to browse our available animals or reach out to our team to start your journey toward a new lifelong friendship.

8/22 - Former Chicago Tribune Photojournalist Creates One-Of-A-Kind Project For Overlooked Animals (11 Pics)

For shelter and rescue animals, being seen as an individual can mean the difference between finding a home and being overlooked when their time is running out. Former Chicago Tribune photojournalist and member of a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporting team Candice C. Cusic has launched a heartwarming initiative called The See Hear Love, the world’s only documentary storytelling project told from the animal’s perspective, to help change that story. 9/22 - Takis was a stray picked up by Animal Control in Wicker Park. She couldn’t walk, and our vet confirmed she had broken ribs from being kicked. Despite that unimaginable cruelty, this girl still loves humans and is extremely needy for affection. She’s fully recovered from her injury, and will be spayed soon and ready for adoption. Her silly personality and loving demeanor has made her a popular gal at Red Door, where she is getting all the love and attention she deserves 🥹❤️ #chicago #chicagorabbits #chicagobunnies #adoptdontshop #rescuerabbit
