At Orphans of the Storm, we take responsibility for every dog and cat that reaches our doors, compassionately sheltering them with the highest standard of care. Our mission is to nurture these animals back to health and place them into warm, loving, adoptive homes where they can enjoy the lives they deserve.
Conveniently located on nine acres between Deerfield and Buffalo Grove, our shelter has served as a sanctuary for homeless pets in Northeastern Illinois and beyond for years. Throughout our history, we have successfully found loving homes for over 150,000 dogs and cats, consistently maintaining a commitment to no-kill principles with a 96.7% release rate in 2024.
We provide a comprehensive environment for our animals, featuring dog wings with outdoor access, cat housing, and a small clinic. Our facility also offers amenities like the Jim Farmer Memorial Dog Enrichment Park and a seven-acre wooded nature trail, ensuring our animals receive both the physical care and enrichment they need while they await their forever families.
We believe that adoption is a joyful partnership, which is why our counseling process focuses on matchmaking to ensure a compatible fit for both the pet and your family. Whether you are looking for a young companion or one of our Orphans’ Treasures—special pets who may have gray whiskers or unique needs—our team is here to provide the support and guidance you need for a successful transition.
We invite you to visit our shelter or one of our offsite adoption events to meet the animals currently looking for a friend for life. You can also visit our website to explore our adoptable pets or fill out an adoption survey to help us start the matching process. We look forward to helping you find your new best friend.
