South Suburban Humane Society
Our Mission
The South Suburban Humane Society is dedicated to creating a better world for pets and the people who love them. We promote the well-being of animals in the Metro Chicago region by providing a safe sanctuary and essential community resources.
Our Roots
What began in 1970 as a small, volunteer-led effort to find homes for homeless pets has grown into a vital community resource. Today, we operate a 19,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art animal resource campus in Matteson, IL, where we care for and shelter thousands of animals every year.
How We Help
Our work goes beyond the shelter doors, impacting 20,000 pets and their people annually. We provide comprehensive care through our Low-Cost Veterinary Clinic, Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic, and a robust foster network that allows pets to recover and thrive in supportive homes before finding their forever families.
The Adopter Connection
Adoption is a joyful partnership that strengthens the human-pet bond. We focus on transparency and provide all the information we have about our animals to help you find a match that fits your lifestyle. Our staff is dedicated to ensuring that every adoption is a positive, supported step toward a lifelong friendship.
Join Us
We invite you to experience the heart and grit that define our organization. Whether you are ready to welcome a new companion into your family or want to support our mission through volunteering or services, we are here to walk with you every step of the way. Visit us at our Matteson campus to meet our wonderful animals today!
