Our Mission
The Hancock County Humane Society is dedicated to finding permanent, safe, and loving homes for the pets in our care. Our guiding motto is, Kindness to Animals, Inevitably Leads to Kindness to People.
Who We Are
Since 1977, our non-profit, no-kill organization has served the local community entirely through the efforts of volunteers and the generosity of donors. We are proud to operate as a completely independent entity, working diligently to support animal welfare without government or tax-based funding.
How We Help
We provide a safe haven for our animals through a combination of our shelter facility and a dedicated network of foster volunteers. Our facility includes a medical isolation suite that allows our team, in cooperation with local veterinarians, to provide essential care to help sick animals transition into healthy, adoptable companions. We also extend our support to the community through a pet food pantry and resources that help reunite lost pets with their families.

We believe in creating lifelong matches, which is why we prioritize a thoughtful adoption process where counselors help ensure each pet and family are perfectly compatible. Because the welfare of our animals is our first consideration, we require in-person meetings to ensure you are fully prepared for the responsibilities of pet ownership. Our team is committed to providing a positive, respectful experience for everyone involved in the adoption journey.

3/27 - In Memory – Dr. Jeffrey Hanssen (PU DVM ’71)
The College of Veterinary Medicine mourns the passing of an alumnus and longtime practitioner from Greenfield, Indiana. Dr. Jeffrey Hanssen died March 12, 2026, at Brandywine - Brickyard Healthcare Center in Greenfield. He was 71.
