Our mission is to build and strengthen pet families, ensuring that every animal has the opportunity to live in a safe, caring, and loving environment. We are dedicated to ending animal suffering through kindness, compassion, and a commitment to our community.
Founded in 1954 on land donated by Bertha Jacoby, the Humane Society of Hobart was established by local citizens to provide a safe haven for stray and abandoned animals. Today, we continue to serve as a vital anchor in Lake County, providing shelter for more than 2,800 pets annually and acting as a contract facility for Hobart, Lake Station, and New Chicago. Our work is driven by a deep belief in our mission and a commitment to building a more humane community for all.
As a proud no-kill shelter, our team of staff and volunteers works tirelessly to provide emergency medical care and a supportive environment for every animal that comes through our doors. Beyond sheltering, we are deeply committed to keeping pets with their families by providing vital resources, including our pet food pantry and free vaccination programs. We work alongside law enforcement during emergencies to rescue animals in crisis, ensuring they receive the protection and care they deserve.
Adopting from us is a meaningful partnership, and we strive to ensure that each pet is placed in a home where they will be cherished and pampered for life. Much like an adoption agency for humans, we use a thoughtful screening process to ensure the best possible match for both the animal and your family. We are here to help you find your new best friend and support your journey as a pet guardian.
We invite you to experience the life-saving work we do firsthand. Visit our website to browse our adoptable animals, learn about our volunteer and foster opportunities, or become a monthly donor to help us continue our mission. Together, we can make a lasting difference in the lives of the animals who need us most.
