Midwest Pet Refuge

Our Mission

Midwest Pet Refuge is dedicated to improving the quality of life for animals in East Central Indiana. We strive to help homeless, abandoned, stray, and unwanted pets while educating our community on the importance of responsible pet ownership.

Who We Are

Located in Portland, Indiana, we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization serving Jay and surrounding counties. For over a decade, we have remained committed to transparency, operating our center at 601 N. Charles St. with a core belief that every animal deserves a second chance at a loving life.

How We Operate

Our work is made possible through a dedicated network of volunteers and foster homes that provide temporary sanctuary for our rescues. We also operate Cat Tales, a unique center that serves as our cat adoption hub, a used bookstore, and a crystal shop. By fostering animals in home environments, we ensure they receive the socialization, medical care, and individual attention they need to thrive before finding their forever families.

Your Role in Their Journey

Adoption is a wonderful partnership that saves a life and opens space for another pet in need. We are here to support you through the transition, providing clear guidance on how to create a loving, stable environment for your new companion. We believe that when you adopt, the world changes forever for that one animal, and we are honored to help facilitate that beautiful connection.

10/9 - Bowie has the kind of look about him that makes you stop scrolling and a personality that makes you glad you did. He’s almost 4 months old, friendly and softer than he has any right to be. He also has two different colored eyes, because apparently one wasn’t enough for him. He came to us with a front leg injury that was already mostly healed. We don’t know what happened, but it’s behind him now. It may give him a slightly funny walk as he grows. We’re calling it character. So far it hasn’t cramped his style, and he’s a lot more interested in getting attention than in worrying about it. Bowie is ready to go home now on a foster-to-adopt contract. Once he’s old enough to be neutered, we take care of that and he’s officially yours. If you’ve been waiting for a sign, this one is staring at you with two different eyes. Applications are open.
